Paypal - can they tell if you're paying from your credit card?

I'm paying for something from ebay. The seller says that he won't accept paypal payments from credit cards. Can he tell if its from a credit card? I would prefer to pay with credit card so I'm tempted to call his bluff.

Yes, the transaction get processed differently than a regular bank funded transaction. Its not a bluff, in order for the seller to accept credit cards, they need to register under a business account. Once that happens, the seller gets charged extra for every transaction(funded and credit card). Most sellers that do not sell a lot of stuff online, prefer to keep a regular account that does not incur fees for every transaction.(bank funded payments are free for non business accounts). BUT if the seller posted that they do accept PayPal payments(using paypal logo), they must accept the credit card payments.

If you do pay by credit card, the seller will more then likely refund your payment and ask you to pay by other means.

Most people do it so it's easier to do a chargeback. One more
reason I only shipped to Confirmed Addresses. Occasionally I
accept from an Unconfirmed if it's a very small amount but
sometimes I just send back to them. First line of my
Description plainly states No Unconfirmed Addresses when using
Paypal, they either don't read it or can't read.

They way I understand it differs from Carm's description on a couple of points.

A non-busines PayPal user can accept credit card payments directly from a buyer only if they elevate their account to a Premium account. Like a Business account, this will incur transaction fees on all payments received (both the usually-free PayPal currency and credit cards.)

If you are a regular, simple PayPal user and want to accept payments from another PayPal user you can receive these payments without fees. It does not matter what method the buyer uses to fund their PayPal account. The buyer could be funding their account an associated bank account or a credit card.

If you're buying on eBay, the seller MUST accept credit cards via PayPal if he accepts any form of PayPal at all. Read the policy at [pages.ebay.com]

If he refuses to accept your PayPal//CC payment, report him as a nonselling seller.
