This video is not for the squeamish, but if you can handle it, it is amazing. I don't think that all the CGI George Lucas could buy could create something as icky as this. This thing is at least 25cm long and looks like a cross between a centipede, a lobster, and something from the Aliens movie. It is the stuff that nightmares are made of.

Here is another video of a different species. This one isn't quite as gross, but it isn't as big as the first one either. The beginning of the video is just the centipede chasing the mouse. Eventually it catches the mouse, but it needed some help. The mouse was very nimble...for awhile.

25 cm if I am right is about 10 inches but that looks way bigger. For nightmares imagine being at an exotic island resort in Asia and having that slide into bed with you. Now I am skipping dinner.

Would be much better if seen in the wild, not too hard to catch a mouse in a 10 gallon fish tank.

I don't think it is going to catch any mice in the wild. Not exactly a speed freak. Ugly? Yes! Fast? No.

graham, in the wild, I would assume they are eating similar kinds of stuff. Many centipedes are both predators and scavengers in the wild-- will eat opportunistically, but will also hunt. Also, I do believe that many if not all species are venomous, which accounts for how quickly that mouse died once the centipede got to it.

Not exactly a speed freak? You have to be joking. Yes, they are speed freaks. I've had several in my house. Luckily, the largest that's come in has been about 6". A friend of mine who lives a few hrs away found one that was about 9 inches (looked to be about the size of the one in the first video).

They're big, venomous & fast.


The first time I saw one, it was scurrying across my floor. It got in through the screen door in my dining room. At first, I thought it was an escaped baby snake! Once I realized what it was, I got a broom & kindly swept it out the front door!

Creepy things. Cool to see one getting a mouse, though.

Where the hell are these things from?!? I just want to know so that I can scratch it off of the list of places to visit before I die.

PeterB's right about where they live. Ones like the red one in the first video are just like what's found out here.

I wouldn't scratch the Southwest off places to visit, though. FWIW, I've lived out here for over 20 yrs and never saw a large centipede until just two years ago. Never seen a scorpion. Only once have I seen a rattlesnake (in the wild).

I think there are creepy crawlies everywhere. & I think I'd rather take the occasional centipede scurrying across my floor than cockroaches (which we don't have in my area).

I suppose if I lived farther outside of town, I'd see more creatures.

In short, they're not something you see every day.

I live in Yakima WA. I've seen Rattle Snakes all over in the area where I go Mtn. Biking, (very near where Davemachine wants to build a house actually). I even found a scorpion once. I've never even heard of Centipedes that size anywhere aside from remote rainforrests. I've seen big centipedes, but that thing is in a different category. That is at least a foot long. That is approaching pet size. Agggh. I'm suffering from a cumulative case of the creepy-crawlies.

I grew up in South Texas. I saw rattlesnakes and scorpions all of the time. I've even been stung by scorpion that I was dumb enough to step on in my kitchen.

But there's something about those centipedes. I've never seen one in the wild, thank goodness.

There's no way I am watching those videos. But it did remind me that my late father had a perfectly gross story involving the Phillipines, a very large centipede hiding under a toilet seat, and a lieutenant who had to sit on the john in the middle of the night. The word "basketball" was employed whenever he told this story. Or perhaps it was "softball" and my imagination has embroidered it a bit over the years. But you get the idea.

I'd rather deal with the centipede -- at least it's big enough that you can see it relatively well. Ever wonder what would happen if, say, brown recluses suddenly developed high-level intelligence and a hatred for humans at the same time?
