oh! OH!

If you get to go to PP, NG --- can you bring me back a real shrunken head?? It need not be Michael Rockefeller, but a white dude with a final surprised look on his face would be cool!

I was there about 5 years ago so my information is , no doubt, a bit out of date. What kind of recommendations are you looking for?

KK is a modern city there is a complete range of hotels to choose from including a Hyatt. I stayed at the Tanjung Aru-outstanding! At another extreme you can probably stay with some Dayaks in a long house.

There is a lot of diversity around. Kadazans, Chinese, Banjaus, Maylays and a bunch of others. English is pretty common. You can find a lot of interesting faces around town.

Eating can be a new experience. There are all kinds of tropical fruit including Durian available. Try a food court in a shopping center. The food variety is enormous - did you ever have corn ice cream?

You have to get out to the country side to get the real flavor of the place. Try some local boat trips and maybe a fishing village.

I did some local travel. Mt Kinabalu is an interesting climb. Near Sandakan there is an orangutan rehab center called Sepilok . Brunei is a short flight where you can see how a Sultan lives. The island of Labuan is the Malaysian version of a tax haven.

The place is full of things you haven't seen before- strange looking animals , plants, and people. Take a lot of pictures and show us some.

Bon Voyage

I went about 10 years ago too.

Went to Sabbah as well.
Snorkeling in Sabbah was pretty good.

The orangutan places are worth seeing.
Went to the one in Sepilok and one at a hotel.
I think it might have even been at the Tanjung Aru?

The hotel one was better than the Sepilok one, because it was much lower key and you could get right up close to the apes.

The food was pretty good and incredibly cheap.
It's probably changed, but they were charging tourists and locals the same price in the food markets.
So you could get meals like say satay sticks and rice for like 20 cents.
