Would a progressive scan DVD player make THAT much difference in picture quality on my RPTV? I've got a player, just thinking of upgrading since i got the TV. But not if its not that big of a difference.

Progressive scan makes a huge difference, but only if you have an EDTV or HDTV with component inputs. For standard definition TV progressive scan won't work...it must be turned off.

Also note that not all progressive scan players are the same. The signal processing in many of the cheaper ones (and even some expensive models) has bugs that produce motion artifacts that show up in a major way on large screen TVs. Stick with Panasonic and Sony and you'll probably be OK. Here's a source that tests the different DVD players for these bugs. [www.hometheaterhifi.com]

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
