I know I need to add RAM and upgrade the OS (256/10.1.2) on this borrowed iBook 600, but when I try to use Disk Utility to repair permissions, the options are grayed out.

are you doing it from the OS CD? You need to on 10.2.something on down. (somewhere in the 10.2.x update cycle they did away with it)

It's the OS that came on it new. It's never been upgraded.

Pretty sure Racer has it right. Before 10.2.5 you had to repair permission by booting from the CD, 10.2.5 was the first to offer the ability to do it while booted from the HD.
