it's NOT a NEW Liver
Posted by: space-time

"Fortune: Apple's Jobs gets new liver, report says"

and various other headlines make it sound like Steve Jobs got a NEW liver. technically, it's a USED liver, in good working condition, but not a NEW liver. Only a baby gets a new liver or if they manage to make a liver out of stem cells.

We don't have details, but given the circumstances there's a good chance that it wasn't even a whole liver.

I'm sure that at the moment that the liver was extracted it was open-source...but I hope it is closed source now.

Steve Jobs: A historical preservation society representative once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

The problem is that if you upgrade to iLiver 2.0 you know that iLiver 3.0 will be available just days after your upgrade.

In my past life I had about 15 years in a hospital environment with some of the worst of the worst.
There was always a history of a bit of gallows humor - you laugh so you don't cry. I'm sure all here wish Steve well.

It took 16 posts before somebody peed in this bowl of corn flakes. Pretty good.

At least Steve's liver is no longer the top 3 stories on the MacResource home page.

Yes, it's good to laugh but just remember where the liver came from. Hopefully some family is happy that Steve is OK because of their loss.

Funny, I was just about to come here and point out that this is a bit macabre.

It is a fair point that the term new is oddly used in organ donation discussions, though. But that is about where it should end.

Well it very well could be a living donation and not a cadaver donation. Living donations have become more
common in the last 10 years or so. It involves transplanting part of a liver from a healthy living donor to the recipient.
The donors liver will regenerate itself back to a normal state. The two still have to be compatible but there is
some latitude when it comes to blood types.

Some are direct donations from a person to a known recipient (if a match) or anyone that is healthy can
sign up to be a potential donor for an anonymous recipient. Many have signed up and been screen to help a friend or loved one
and found not to be a match - but have stayed in the system anyway.

My late wife donated all of her organs. Including her liver.

As an insider, I say that AppleCare should be available for those who want it.
