Cellphone question - can you still get new TDMA phones for AT&T wireless service?

My wife has a cell phone for work (Nokia 8260) that is getting a little long in the tooth.
She'd like to upgrade without having so switch over to Cingular.

Is it still possible to upgrade the phone (she has TDMA service) without switching to Cingular?

If so, where can you buy new phones?

New? No. New USED phones, yes. But their eatures will still suck. No bluetooth, no camera. But you can get a new phone. It does have to be off eBay though.

Sorry, as my friend says, I'm being mean, I'm not trying to.

I wouldn't spend too much money on a TDMA phone. It may not be long before she's forced to take a GSM phone.

You can get a free phone from beyond wireless (gobeyondwireless.com) USED, and it uses AT&T Blue TDMA. I have two.

Thanks for the info. Kind of what I thought after looking at the Cingular site.

So, as a follow up question, is it possible to move to a GSM phone, but stay with the AT&T plan?

What's the problem with Cingular and GSM?

GSM is fast and provides more basic services (like 911 location).

Asking for TDMA is like asking for a NuBus Mac. You can find one, but it won't be much good.

I don't have a problem with either - actually, my cell phone is a Cingular GSM. The issue is really with the rate plans. The plan she has now is much better than anything Cingular has available. And, her company pays it directly (no reimbursement forms, etc).

And as far as a NuBus Mac, I have 3 at home. You got a problem with that??

I have a Cingular plan that is $30 per month (before the SBC discount). It has 250 Anytime minutes and 1000 night/wknd minutes, which is fine for me. I had to ask for it when I switched from AT&T because they don't advertise it in their plan list on their website. I think it's called Nation 250 or something like that.

I'm still on the AT&T plan. I've bought several replacement phones on eBay for $25 to $30. Just look for the "I'm selling my mother's phone" ads and look for low lifetime minute timer readings in the 10s of hours and you'll get a virtually new phone. There are plenty of people out there who have cell phones but never use them.
