Pismo just getting old?

Hinges getting loose, AC charger needs to be inserted in a certain way to charge, and now it won't let me burn a disk. I have a Lite-On external burner that I used to have mounted in the Piz but removed it to use with my Mini9 with which it works fine. I have a couple of files I want to copy but when I plug in the Lite-On And fire up Toast it says there is nothing hooked up. Switched USB ports; nothing, and then went to System Info which says there IS a Lite-On burner connected to the port.
I restarted, RP'd, but still same results. What am I missing here?
Pismo 400 G3 1GB ram 10.4.11.

What version of Toast?

Will a disc mount in the Finder off of that burner?

Does the burner have Firewire?

Zapped the PRAM and Repaired permissions?

5.2.3. Used it just a couple of months ago with no issues other than it was still installed in the Pismo.

No indication that it's being read other than it showing up in Sys Info. It is in a USB enclosure.
Haven't zapped but did RP.

So you've never tried to burn from the Pismo using the drive in that enclosure?

If so, the enclosure seems to be the problem.

It works fine hooked up the Mini9.
Yeah, I got it in December of '99. This past April I loaned it to some friends who were in Florida for two months and needed something for email. It worked like a champ-has an Airport card in it and they piggybacked off the next door neighbor!
The button to open the burner door quit working on it so I removed the drive and put it back in the original enclosure to use with the Mini9 and figured I could use it externally with the Pismo if I ever needed to.
I'll fiddle with it some more. Thanx for the input.

check the toast drivers - they might be old for using this as an external burner.

The Pismo only has USB 1.1 - will be slow as an external drive, especially compared to the relatively faster speed of the internal (IDE?) connector.

[That is still my favorite Apple laptop of all time - just ahead of my original Lapzilla PB17 G4].

My Pismo is now my iTunes jukebox for my Stereo System... all iTunes, all the time.

Mine still works fine, but is cracking in several places. It could use a new screen (I have the bulb, but
that was 3 years ago - and the install could be impossible depending on screen brand once you
get in that far... so I left it alone and never even unpacked the bulb!)

Otherwise, mine sits as an 80GB FW Target Mode drive for the moment.
