I have 3 volumes showing on my desktop, "Machination" & "Duplication" (partitions on the same drive), and "Foundation". Machination is the startup disk and it's icon on the desktop is always in the uppermost position. I'd like to always see Duplication in the spot directly under it. Whenever I restart, however, Foundation goes into spot 2 and I have to manually swap them. I don't know how to change this, short of setting the Finder preferences to sort alphabetically - which would move everything on my desktop. What logic is being used to decide which drive goes into what position?

I hate volumes on the Desktop, so 1984.
But, I think it is mount time order.:
StartUp Volume
I MountedFirstAfterStartUp
I MountedSecond

Don't know either but here's a little program that automates putting the icons into whatever position you want - [www.versiontracker.com]

You could also make an alias of each drive/volume.

Go to Finder/Preferences ... and uncheck "Hard Disks" under "Show these items on Desktop."

Arrange the drive/volume aliases as you please. They will retain their desktop position.

It has something to do with size . . . can't remember which exactly. Either how big it is, how much space is used, or how much space is free . . .

I've got 4 volumes and one external on my desktop.

Seems to me that the ones with the least free space are on the top.

so the order on my desktop is:

boot drive

other drives (least free space -> most free space)

external drives

When I'm on the desktop and select "View Options" I have the options set to "Keep arranged by Kind". And when I do this it displays all my hard drives first, with the boot drive as the first icon and the other hard drive icons listed alphabetically.
