What's the difference between Login Items and Startup Items?

Apps that I want to automatically launch at login I add to sys prefs Accounts/Login Items. Is this the best way or should I simply put apps into /Users/cj/Library/StartupItems? Any pros cons to this approach?

Always heard the former was the way to go. Never heard of the latter, but feels like it might gunk thing up.

Are you talking about manually adding these items? Or adding them through System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items and clicking the +?

I always use the Sys Prefs method.

Do not mess with the StartupItems folder. It is a specialized resource for developer use only.

Remember when there were Startup Items and Shutdown Items folders we could add stuff to?
