Sad day in the mac world - been to macfixit recently? It's now just another CNET drone

FOr the first time in years I've discovered a rather obscure, but important (to me) bug in snow leopard. Under snow leopard, you can no longer do a safe boot from a boot raid (set up with Disk Utility).

I went over to report it.. and it can't be done.

It's now just part of CNET reviews - it's pretty damned useless now...

too bad - no other site came close to doing what macfixit once did.

CNET was actually bought out a couple years ago by CBS.

MacFixit's been dead to me for years, since they went subscription with years of free content created by their visitors.

Same here. I understand the desire to make money rather than lose it, but the site was *based* on user input, and there were tons of it.

Granted, not all of it was helpful, as a lot of so-called OS bugs were actually the result of someone's bad system, but even that was user contributed.

I guess you could write to the "editors" if you wanted your problem noted on the site:

...But why would anyone want to contribute to that fugly POC?

I too was saddened by what I deem the final demise of MacFixit when I visited it last week for the first time in a year or so, hoping for some interesting Snow Leopard insights. It started with the shift to subscription content, which I understood and even paid one annual due in the hopes that the search function would reveal the solution to a problem I had found there previously. Between the poverty of the search algorhythm (you could search for a term but no way to search for a specific multi-word combination of terms such as "reset power manager".) Then the site became increasingly iTunes/Pod/Phone/Life oriented - I couldn't care less about some obscure issue with pasting images downloaded from my iPhone into iPhoto onto my album tracks in iTunes!

Queue the dirge! It seems like all the good old Mac sites are slowly fading away... resexcellence, macminute, macgeekery, even sites like afp548 and macwindows these days don't seem to have that much going on. Heck, even macosxhints is stymied by the new obscurity level for strings to define plist commands in 10.6 such that the new hints for Snow Leopard are pretty lacking.

I guess I need to find out what the hot new Mac (geek) sites are...

Try MacSurfer.com . . . not specifically for the site, but they also have a listing of many Mac sites near the bottom of their home page. I haven't compared them to Alltop, so . . .

macsurfer is really the only mac site that resembles what it looked like 10 years ago - still pretty useful...
