Rhode Island soccer ruffians.

I love the coach interviewed at the end. She sounds just like coaches throughout time. big grin smiley

"Frustrations are frustrations.... We're both physical teams. You can only take so much and at a certain point someone snapped.... I don't know how the banter went. Things just got out of control. I know I pride myself and my girls on sportsmanship.... so, I'm not gonna take the fall for that."

The clock ticks until that first jockette stuffs a nerdette into a locker... big grin smiley

IMO, girls/women soccer games I have covered have been rougher and tougher than the boys/mens games with less whining to the refs. I am not surprised at all this is happening. Is it good or bad for girls/womens sports? Hard to say but maybe they would rather have a rough and tough image over being expected to rip a shirt off when a goal is score like Brandi Chastain.

I coached a girls team for 12 years and was president of a very large (over 1,000 players) soccer club for a few of those years. I only once encountered a team (opponents from another league) where that level of violence was condoned, and at half time I told the ref we were going to walk off the field if he wouldn't deal with it (he did). This kind of behavior is fairly isolated IMHO and it is restricted to certain leagues and areas where the parents are out of control and encourage bad behavior. We almost entirely squashed that tendency in our own club and league by requiring coaches, refs, and parent reps from every team to attend positive coaching alliance [www.positivecoach.org] workshops.

Before everyone gets worked up about how bad girls/womens soccer is, realize that the incidents on the news are isolated and involve few players, and certainly the New Mexico incident was a result of a bad ref who allowed the game to get out of control. In a properly refereed game action is swift and severe (assault on another player is an automatic red card and ejection from the game, PLUS your team doesn't get to replace you so you will likely contribute to them losing since it is a massive disadvantage to play with fewer players on the field).

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

This is pretty much par for the sport. As soccer gets more popular here, we should see more fights, both on the field and in the stands. And as the refs don't enforce the rules, I wont be surprised if/when a shooting takes place.

I agree.

I'm disappointed that so much violence in sports (fights among athletes and athletes and coachs) and sports related violence (fights among fans) is treated as "sportsmanship, part of the game" and not criminal acts they really are.

But I guess we don't want to see sports "ruined".

I don't know if soccer will here will reach the level of violence it generates in other countries. Maybe hockey can step up its game to fill in the gap.

Agreed.

I think we'd be much more appreciative of that kind of violence if it involved naked chicks female age-appropriate athletes and mud.

That is complete BS in my opinion and merely fuels the rage/outrage situation.

The biggest issue we have in youth sports is that the parents get confused between actual sports (i.e. what their kids play) and the millionaire-pantomine contests they see on TV (i.e. major league sports). Take the moronic parent factor out of the equation, train refs well (i.e. so they start carding early in the game and frequently if the players seem determined to push the envelope) and problem solved.

Look at what happens at soccer games globally. There's tons of both on field and off field violence.

You're saying there's something endemic to the sport that causes off-field violence? That is completely absurd. If the most popular sport in Italy, England and Spain was baseball instead of football, there'd still be hooliganism and groups of ultras running around in the streets beating each other up. Though in Western Europe, at least, off-field fan violence is way down from the bad old days of the 70s and 80s.

That would be completely true if our citizens are better people than those of other countries.

We don't have the history of soccer (aka football?) that other countries do, so we may not get that violent. But we *do* have "moronic parents" and less than "well trained refs" in the equation.

I hope you're right and that it won't happen. I just don't have your optimism.

I wonder how much of the increased rage can be attributed to our love for "physicality" in sports. Over the last generation, college basketball has gone from a finesse sport with occasional contact to a full-on rugby match. Even the women are now slamming each other under the watchful eyes of the refs. Commentators love the action!

In soccer, both girls and boys are coached to push the limits of the rules by leaning, bumping, and pushing. The finesse of the beautiful game is being coached out because the refs are intimidated about following the rules.

Indeed, I heard an ex-football player bemoan this kind of coaching. He claimed that the Bellicheck-coached Patriots are told to hold on every play because the NFL officials know they cannot flag every play lest the fans complain.

I quit watching much of the NBA when it became more of a contact sport. The fact some are wearing pads under their jerseys is a clear indication that it's more of a contact sport these days. The skill is largely gone from the game.

It's a bit interesting that this is being viewed as being specific to soccer. I see it as a pretty pedestrian human occurrence.

Sports + the physical and emotional aggression of competition + human nature = Occasional violence/occasional extreme violence.

That women athletes, as they become acculturated to sports, will not behave pretty much the same way as men under the same circumstances, just seems to be one more myth of the sexes biting the dust.

I found this in regards to basketball:

Quote

James Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules of basketball:
... 5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed.

Dr. Naismith, the creator of basketball envisioned a game of finesse, not strength. Oh, how his game, (and sports in general) has corrupted that vision.
