Toast vs. OS X 10.6.1 Built-in Burning
Posted by: magicmikey

I've been living with Roxio Toast Titanium 6 for quite a while now. I have the Snow Leopard upgrade but haven't made the jump yet because of a few applications that aren't compatible. One of them is Toast Titanium 6. I don't do a lot of complex burning. Mostly, I make simple CDs and DVDs.

Is there any real reason to buy Toast Titanium 10 vs. using the built-in burning ability of OS X?

Thanks,
Michael

If you can't name a specific feature that Toast 10 has, that the built-in Disk Utility/Finder burn doesn't have, you should not get Toast.

Does 10.6.1 burn VIDEO_TS files (folders)?

Make a UDF disk image, copy your VIDEO_TS folder to it and burn to DVD with the DU.

'Depends on how simple "simple" is.

The Finder's burn folders are useful.

I'm soon going to be in the same boat.... been running Toast 6 for years, never felt the need to upgrade. But, if it doesn't work in 10.6 (which I will be switching to after the release of 10.6.2 or so), I'll probably need to upgrade. I do a lot of audio burning and you just don't have the same amount of control in itunes or finder burns to set different amounts of silence between tracks. Also, I do a lot of DVD burning which is made a whole lot easier in Toast without having to do some sort of workaround just to use the finder burns.

What's the oldest version of toast that's 10.6 compatible?

I need to be able to create custom hybrid discs - hide some files from Macs, some from Windows. Does 10.6 still not let you do this?

Looks like 7.1.3 is the oldest version with 10.6 compatibility:

w00t. It's the oldest with Intel compatibility. Since they release a new version of Toast like every 8mo, I should be able to wait until at least version 14 before I need to upgrade again.
