Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Could He Be Any Cooler?

Listening to NPR weekend edition; he was just on talking about his leukemia diagnosis. The man oozes both coolness and kindness. Hearing his voice took me back to the Airplane movie. Hilarious. He is now working on a documentary about a 1939 Harlem basketball team, the first team ever to win a national championship the way he described it. Cool.

Lou Alcindor lived in the same complex as a good friend of mine when he played for the (then) Milwaukee Bucks. I ran into him in the elevator once and couldn't believe how tall he was. Never got to know him personally, but at least I brushed elbows with greatness.

depending upon your height and his, perhaps the top of your head brushed the elbow of greatness!

Kareem is a very personal man and has lived through life's ups and downs. He once lost his home, an uninsured mansion, to fire - he doesn't go public without a reason.

I wish him well and hope he comes through this to live a normal life span.

He kinda drove my dad batty. When he was a student at UCLA, LAPD narcotics was sure he was a major marijuana dealer, but they could never catch him at it.

Kareem vs. Bruce

That was both sad and funny.

Kareem vs. Bruce

That was both sad and funny.

Kind of goofy, but it was choreographed that way.

In real life, Kareem had great respect for Lee and even vice versa. Some early footage exists where the two actually sparred (not choreographed) and you'll see Bruce Lee having a fair amount of trouble with his pupil. Lee has been quoted as saying that Kareem's reach made it difficult to fight him. Simply put, he could reach you with a high percentage strike, but at that distance you could only really counter with a low percentage strike.

In the end, my money would be on Bruce Lee for sure. :-) But I did find it interesting that Lee has said that Kareem was one of the few opponents he's had where he had to rethink the entire strategy of the fight.

I don't think it was choreographed to be goofy, it's just as good as one was going to get out of Kareem. I doubt the producer really cared about a lot of attention to detail.

Lee trained Kareem for awhile, whose reach was formidable, but Lee's speed was fantastic, not to mention his skill. I had the privilege of seeing Lee in person, and I'd bet big money that for the most part he was giving Kareem far more credit than he really deserved. Fighting a martial-artist the size of Kareem would be very difficult.

I will say that he probably sparred better than he was choreographed. It takes a lot of skill to look like you're actually fighting, and hurt another actor.

Lee was a martial-artist/actor, Abdul-Jabbar was a former athlete/actor/martial-artist-in-training.
