Brother prints mirror image

Got a buddy with an MF5480. I just erased and installed 10.4.11 on his 1.33G G4 12" pbook.
So essentially it's a brand new device, 2 days old.

The pbooks former life was 10.3.2 or whatever was sold with it new. The combo did the same thing, mirror image printing.

The Brother was formerly connected to his XP box (virile to the point of total rebuild) and it had printed fine.

When installing the other day, I foolishly neglected to try printing to anything, figuring this was just a freak.

Barring a default checkbox (why?) for mirror image printing, has anyone any ideas for fixing this ill?

Otherwise the pbook behaves fine.

Don't recall a "MF5480" model. There's a MFC-5460 & 5490 and a MFC-5840.
They all have network connection. My guess is the unit is configured to default to mirror printing. You can use the Brother BRAdmin Lite utility to change the configuration via network connection.

Or, you could try deleting /Users/$USER$NAME$/Library/Preferences/com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist.

thanks Panopti. I'll look into those ideas.

He did try to flip the USB, Mark, but it wouldn't fit in the FW port.
I'll suggest later that he put the USB from the pbook in his ear and stare at the printer during printing.

Turn your printer around, or the computer, but not both at the same time. smiling smiley

Is it truly a mirror image, or is it just rotated? Do you need to hold it up to a mirror to read the text?

With all of the options that I've seen over the years, I've never seen an option to print a mirror image, but lots of ways to rotate the image.

If you try printing to a PDF instead of the printer, is the page normal or mirror image?

On a more serious note, here's a similar problem with an easy solution:

I had him update his driver from Brother site.
We then deleted the existing printers in PSU.
Rebooted and his printer came up with the new driver (though the version looks to be the same under info).
Voila! It prints normal and it worked after a number of shut down/start ups, so I think and hope it finally stuck.

I did have him dl the Brother BRAdmin Lite though we didn't get that far as he didn't have a Cat5.
