friend has a 5840 printer and G4 pbook 1.33Ghz, 756M ram, 10.4.11.
He installed the "latest" drivers from Brother, CUPS 1.1.
When he prints, it comes out in reverse (mirror image).
Print can be fixed on a per use per application basis, but we can't make it stick.
Using TeamViewer yesterday (which works frighteningly well, even thru his dial up) I double checked his work and P&F prefs.

Any ideas for a permanent fix or is the printers age the more likely problem; combined with Brothers lack of "enthusiasm"??

Weird issue. I don't have this problem with either Brother laser.

I had him update his driver from Brother site.
We then deleted the existing printers in PSU.
Rebooted and his printer came up with the new driver (though the version looks to be the same under info).
Voila! It prints normal and it worked after a number of shut down/start ups, so I think and hope it finally stuck.

I did have him dl the Brother BRAdmin Lite though we didn't get that far as he didn't have a Cat5.
