Any suggestions for simple, free forum sites?
Posted by: lost in space

Our luthiers' group is looking for a free forum, having long ago outgrown Google groups. The forums I've looked at so far, like ning.com and yuku, have obnoxious video ads, sometimes two running at once. Ads are OK, if they're like the Google text ones.

Thanks.

You could register a domain, and build a Phorum based (or YABB, or numerous other) forum packages...

Might be more than you want to bite off, but it's an option!

Oh, man, that can't be what they were going for, is it? I haven't been back over there in a while, but that is truly awful.

Paul,

Thanks, I could do that, but then I'd own it forever. I'm after something I can hand off to someone else in a year or so, hopefully without me becoming the permanent go-to guy when someone wants permissions tweaked, or updates installed.

The DM/F issue is probably just temporary. Looks like they lost the header and footer template files. That's what the forum looks like without any CSS.

I really don't think that there is an alternative to registering a domain name and using Phorum on a hosted site. Nothing else will give you the privacy and cleanliness you want. I tried Posterous, and no one in our group could ever figure out how to use it. It was a bust for non-geeks. Claimed to be simple -- wasn't.

Yup. Lesson learned from being the only geek in within reach, eh?
