one person's help needed
Posted by: abevilac

Would someone please try to open this website for me? It was made by one of my students and I just need to check that it opens properly. It should not go to an IU mypage error page. Thanks.

I can get to all the user homepages (106 for the letter 'z' )

except for the message :"You are forbidden to view the requested page (Error 403)."
all the links seem to work fine.

So, I think you are all looking at the red / blue page that is IU's error 403 page. Did anyone see something else? It's supposed to be her own page. I have no idea what it's supposed to look like.

Thanks.

Looks like a generic error page to me. No content besides school-generated stuff.

"You are forbidden to view the requested page (Error 403)."

Maybe the (actual) page is viewable only from within the University's network?

Most pages there I've tried are viewable.
The user has set his/her bits to be unseen.

There's no hebutler turning up in the index by name (assuming that "Butler" is the last name). It looks like there's not even an account set up yet.

Perhaps you should direct her to the help-pages.

This is a distance class so I never actually see any of them; I just asked her to call me and we had a talk. I think her problem [besides not purchasing the book and going through all of the homework assignments] was that she named the file "webpage.1_files.htm" I thought that was some sort of default name for the folder.
None of my students are listed in the index and they have all [save this one] been successful in publishing their websites -- maybe the index isn't updated often...

thanks again for your help.

she named the file "webpage.1_files.htm..."

So, she never made an "index.html" or "home.html" page? That's a problem right there. How's a web browser supposed to find the start page if it's got the wrong name?

that's not the web browser's job, it's the server's.

:::sigh:::

Okay.

With her use of that kind of naming convention, how's the server supposed to locate the directory index?

How do I know?
Web servers can be configured all kind of ways.
Note that the server they're using utilizes custom pages that override the standard error pages ( 401, 403, 404, etc ).
She could name the page anything she wants, as long as she submits the proper URL to the instructor, then it would work.
The problem is, she didn't complete the assignment correctly, and she didn't check her work, not simply that she named her folder/files wrong.

The instructor was the OP. If he was also the admin, he'd know what was in her directory.
