for those of you contemplating or already completed an update or change to gas HW heat and domestic indirect HW.
What makers and options have you found?

So far I've found.

I looked into various boiler exotica but was advised against it by a few different plumbers. Part of their reticence to install an exotic burner can be attributed to lack of familiarity but I kept hearing about maintenance costs (this is esp true of the condenser boilers). In the end, the savings from a 92 to 88 ES rating, for example, does not amount to an incredible amount of money nor pollution for a typical household. To maximize the amount of good one can do for the environment based on dollars, there are other methods to Save The World that will not set you back an extra $12,000.

It depends on the temperature you need. For radiant hydronic floors you only need a out 135 degrees so a boiler is too hot and will have maintenance issues due to too much cycling. For mine I went with a condensing hot water heater (Voyager). Polaris also makes one. If you want to go indirect he then check out the Munchkin. If you have radiators then your temp need will be higher and you will need a boiler most likely.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

yea, radiators , unfortunately.
We were thinking of updating to radiant, but the hard wood floors are in good shape and there is no real access from the crawl space.
