VLC / iTunes clash of interest?

When I have something playing in VLC and I hit the pause button on F8 on my macbook, iTunes starts playing.

Clash of interest? Or, is there a way to override?

iTunes thinks your are un-pausing it, yes? Seems like both apps can be started/stopped with the F8 key. I have VLC but haven't noticed that, probably because A. I use my mouse to pause or un-pause VLC, not a function key, or B. iTunes isn't on and active, with a song queued up ready to un-pause and begin playing.

I believe you can go into Preference Panes and reassign. Or within iTunes or VLC's preferences.

I see a similar issue with Keynote and iTunes.

Keynote seems to trump iTunes which makes sense but it's annoying when you want to design in Keynote and listen to tunes.
