Recovered files in trash - what gives?

Hey Experts,

Ever since I updgraded to 10.4.6, I've noticed a lot of "recovered files" in the trash every time I restart my computer. Bizarre "temp" files, Quicken portfolio stuff, ICC profiles, etc.

WTF?

Thanks to anyone who can solve this mystery!

Thanks Peter!

Interesting that Apple is aware of this issue, and basically says : "don't worry!"

I WAS a bit worried when I saw that it was "saving" my Quicken data. Visions of Russian hackers began floating through my head.

Oh well.

But you're right that it's new since 10.4.6 -- I don't recall seeing them in 10.4.5 or 10.4.2...

Maybe Apple thought you all were nostalgic for OS 9. :-)

I'm only in 10.4.4 and I've noticed this! So I doubt it's just a 10.4.6 thing.

In fact, I first really noticed it over the weekend. I'm pretty obsessive about making sure the trash is empty. I happened to notice it wasn't, so I investigated and found the mysterious recovered files.

Glad it's nothing to worry about. smiling smiley

Steph, what's weird is that it must then only be in 10.4, 10.4.4, and 10.4.6 -- because I was in 10.4.2 for a very long time, then went to 10.4.5 (and was there for awhile), and recently went to 10.4.6. I didn't notice it in 10.4.2, and I'm pretty sure not 10.4.5 (but maybe it was there), and now it's in 10.4.6 again.

how very odd!

Well, I've had this computer for about a month now & I'm not sure how many times the recovered files thing has popped up. I know it's at least once though. smiling smiley

Quicken and Office like to leave nuggets like this behind. Particularly after the latter crashes.

No, you're both wrong, and Stephanie is right-- it's occurred before Tiger.6, though I don't remember it happening it Panther. I had it in Tiger.0. So it may be new to you, but it goes back a bit. For me, it's always AOL files.

This question came up at dealmac a couple of months back. It's just the OS dump some file caches.

I wish Apple would change the title of that folder. "Recovered" is entirely misleading and disconcerting, at first.

RAMmie, it does seem to be going by OS version release-- a quick read over at Macfixit.com confirms. 10.4, 10.4.4, and 10.4.6 are affected, possibly other versions.
