New 27" Quad iMac in the house!

Ordered on Dec. 4. Delivered this morning. My G5 must have known it was coming because it crapped out after I left for work. Got a call from wifey saying that the mouse, keyboard, everything was locked up tight. Rebooted and it froze again. Came home to check it out. Hardware diagnostics came back clear. Took out some 3rd party memory and disconnected the internal backup drive to no avail. Then the FedEx lady showed up with a big box. Wow, 27" is big. Finally got the G5 to boot in Safe Mode... no more freezing. Fired up the iMac and started migration assistant. So far so good. We're 4 hours away from making the switch... and just in time too.

Funny how computers can "sense" that the end is near. Either they keel over or all of the issues that they were having, once new computer is in place, all of the sudden go away (as if they are in competition with the new computer).

Congrats! They're a great machine for the price. Before Apple released them I was really dismayed Apple had such poor offerings. If you don't care about being able to upgrade, PCI slots... the 27" iMac is a good deal.

BTW earache, isn't this the second time a G5 had died on you? Do you use a UPS? I've had no hardware failures since I started using UPS's.

My G5 has been pretty solid up until recently. The graphics card died a few years back. Had a drive go bad once. Most recently it's been having some networking issues which may have been a precursor to the hardware issues I'm having now. For a 5 year old machine I think I got my money's worth. So glad I ordered that iMac when I did. I don't use a UPS because I almost never have power outages. I've got some good powerstrips though.

No cracked screen. Drive noise is non-existent (1TB). Thus far the screen looks great, but I haven't actually booted all the way up yet. I went straight to migration assistant since my G5 was looking like it was on death's door. I thought for sure it was going to blow up before I could move my data. Will report on the screen later. BTW, this is a week 50 build unit. Earlier builds had many more problems.

There were some other issues with the 27" iMacs that caused Apple to shop shipping them out within the past two weeks. Not just the cracked screen thing, but some issues with flickering and yellow-tinged displays, so you will want to keep an eye out for those problems.

Otherwise:

I'm waiting until after the holidays, but I have my eye on the 27" Core i7 version. Should be able to file recipes faster than ever!

I do have a G5 that works perfectly. I would pay shipping for a straight up trade. Otherwise, LEADER.
