Aw...no joy for Pismo as Ubuntu machine?

No booting from the DVD. <sad face>

I'm guessing that's because of the 3rd-party DVD drive I have in there?

I've tried putting the disc into the PowerBook, which then goes into Target mode. But the Pismo doesn't see either the PB or the disc with the option-key boot chooser.

Clever suggestions are most welcome.

Was there an earlier post about this, or is this all there is to choose from?

Did you put the Pismo in TDM and try copying the disc over to the Pismo's HD?

Don't use Ubuntu?

Seriously, it'd be tricky, but you could netboot it.

Don't I need to boot from the disc to install? If so, how can I do that with the disc contents copied to the HD? Maybe I'm not understanding.

I don't know GtDS, is this a flavor of unix?
Do you have the instructions?
If the disc won't boot from that drive that most likely means that ubuntu won't see it after install.

Shame that DSL [www.damnsmalllinux.org] isn't available for PPC machines. Maybe you could try the CD version or the Live CD of either Ubuntu or another Linux distro for PPC.

Just a thought...

I installed Ubuntu on a tray loading iMac. Runs beautifully. Had to do a few tweaks to get it right but after that, it's pretty fast.

There is also Yellow Dog Linux. It is a clone of RedHat. It is the only OS other than OS X that Apple allows to be sold on Macs.

Ubuntu for PPC is a relatively new thing so support is iffy. By support I mean from the community and in terms of what hardware it will work with. Yellow Dog has been doing this for a long time and has a pretty good track record with PPC. You may need to use an older version of YDL for the Pismo though.

I installed YDL 3 on my iMac DVSE a few years back and it went very well. I would guess it would work well on the Pismo, too. I think there may have been an issue with YDL 4 working with the Pismo's CD drive, but I could be remembering wrong or else it was corrected long ago, for all I know. Woops, I just noticed you have a 3rd-party DVD drive in there so I guess it's a moot point.
