Are these roads?
Posted by: Dakota

I believe we were somewhere over Colorado when I noticed these "roads", but are they really roads? There is nothing there. Are they even man-made? One seems to run along ridges, both go amazingly straight and yet with no apparent start or finish.

High Tension line right-of-ways?

Or pipeline right-of-ways. Roads usually aren't straight for those distances.

That would be my guess as well...high voltage powerlines.

They sure take the shortest-distance-between-two-points-is-a-straight-line motto seriously. It sure can't be the easiest to build route. One of them abruptly ends on the edge of a cliff. Where is the power going?

The thing that's friekin' me out is you've got a giant yellow date stamp in the corner of your pics. You do realize that's optional, yes?

Yeah, I know. That's why I turned it on. I knew I wouldn't be entering them in some sort of photo shoot contest.

Roads? Where we're going we don't need any... Roads.

Power or gas lines, except possibly in SouthWest some of the native americans built some structures and maintained 'paths' having to do with Summer and Winter solstices.

so, what are those things? i've always called them circles when i see them from a plane. seeing shots of them in Up In The Air reminded me i still don't understand what they are.

They are irrigated fields. For relatively flat land they developed sprinkler systems that consist of an overhead pipe carried on wheeled towers with spray heads attached. One end of the pipe is connected to a center pivot, and the whole string goes around and covers a circle to water the crop underneath. It is cheaper than other systems to operate, but costs more up-front. I would provide a link to a picture, but can't locate a reasonable sized one quickly.

Here is a very nice representative photo showing a rotating field irrigation sprinkler on wheels. This is what you see from the sky.

But you also see them in urban areas. I thought they were storage tanks.
