Use Mini as portable?
Posted by: anonymouse1

Has anybody put together a rig to use a Mini as a portable-i.e., a small LCD and keyboard, to use as a portable. I'm going to be doing some travelling, and I'd like to be able to justify buying a Mini!

I don't have to have a battery pack to run it while I'm travelling, although that would be nice--just need to have a full setup at the far end.

TIA.

seems to me that an imac would be more portable - built in monitor.

I think he speaks of the iMac, not the mini.

Let's see - to use the mini as a portable, you'd need to lug around the computer, an LCD, a keyboard and a mouse plus a battery pack if you want to use it away from an outlet.

Buy an iBook and be done with it.

No intel ibook yet, and the Macbook is a budget buster for me.

I don't need to use it away from an outlet. What I need is a an 8" to 12" LCD with 1024x768 resolution, and a keyboard from a tablet (which is what I'm typing on now-I just put the thing in my lap, and use the trackpad-really reduces the carpal tunnel thing).

The hard part is finding an 8" to 12" LCD with 1024x768 res. Any ideas on that one?

My alternative is to buy a used PC laptop, and I really don't want to do that!

What are you using it for? A G3 ibook would be $500 or less and could be used for 6 months, sold for almost no loss, and then you could buy an InteliBook.

I need to run Windows at a reasonable speed and cost; hence, a Solo Mini, for under $600.

buy something else then. Cheapest 1024x768 LCD I've found so far was $400+ and was just a panel with a VGA port. Haven't seen a ready to go solution for an LCD of that size with that resolution (800x600 or less is common). Then again, I was just looking at panels and not complete solutions. Oh yea, eBay had some stuff, but it was all out of HK with ridiculous shipping that put the price at $260+.

Amazon has 1.3 GHz iBooks for $999. Just buy it and giggle with glee about how much time you saved not messing around with some stupid portable LCD.

The macbook should be out "any day now" (presumably a Tuesday). It would be absurd to use a mini as a portable when what you really need is the new macbook. If you're desperate for something "right this minute", then buy a used or refurbed ibook (or a PC laptop) as suggested by peterw and tahoedrew and then sell it after you buy the macbook.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Wow, the guy uses a lot of masking tape!
Not really good for electronics.
Gets really brittle after while, falls apart.
