I was at Home Depot and was going to impulsively buy a Glacier Bay faucet that looked great. Another guy that was there was told by a contractor that Glacier Bay was a great brand to get so we were both happy with our choices. As I was walking away a HD guy caught the other man's attention and mentions Glacier Bay is crap and that he only buys Delta. Sounds like a good move for the HD guy because Delta was so much pricier than what I was holding. I have two toddlers learning to use the sink and don't want crap for them to pull on and snap off. But I am unemployed still and can't afford the best so I am looking for something inbetween. Any thoughts?

BTW, our current sink was the house original and is literally falling apart.

Glacier Bay is indeed crap- it's equivalent to their house brand like Ryobi; but if you're on a tight budget it may work for you.
I could see that a contractor would think it was fine-- looks OK, doesn't cost much. Delta is a hair better; I think Home Depot discontinued Price-Pfister. Moen is OK if they have it.

And there are different product lines within P-Pf, Moen, Delta, etc. HD and Lowes carry the budget or value lines of the major manufacturers.

I bought an inexpensive bathroom faucet at Meijer, of all places, a year or two ago. Was the most expensive one I'd consider getting, and that was $50 or $60 bucks. Felt bad getting it at the time, and twisted it into a surprise for the wife to make myself feel better. It worked out OK though. Don't know the brand or model off the top of my head, I'll have to take a look and post back.

A good brand is Kohler. Heavy, solid brass and stainless steel built to last a lifetime. Other good brands are Moen, Grohe and the better Delta's (they make a crap contractor grade too). But I've always been partial to Kohler. Actually there are cheap contractor grades of all the makes except Kohler, generally those are what the box stores will have the most of.

You can spend $100+ on a Kohler bathroom faucet at retail; online for $70 or $30 for the same exact one from an eBay dealer. Choice is yours. I redid the entire house via ebay with nary an issue.

My suggestion is look at faucets online for a design you like, note the price and store then see if you can get it cheaper via ebay. Either price will likely be far cheaper than the box stores. It will take 5-7 days to arrive but you'll save as much as 75%.

I've had good luck getting nice faucets at deep discounts from dealyard.com.

No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.

I let plumbers choose, and they put in some Price Pfister (sp)... Now when I need to fix the stem, or put a new seal or seat in, I have the tools, and it can be repaired. Escpecially good to go with quality if it is built into the wall. If it is just one of those that sit on a sink, and takes you 30 minutes to exchange, may not be a problem.

I've had good luck with Delta in terms of longevity.Moen is okay, and their customer service was awesome when I had an issue. They take lifetime warranty seriously and no crap about receipt or original packaging.

I didn't mention Grohe or Kohler because the question was specific to Home Depot and I don't think you can find them there, but if you can find a 'real' brand online at a discount, so much the better.

I hate the ones that you pull the knob straight out to turn on and then push in to turn off. I thought they were Moen but I don't see them on their site. I have encountered them in motel rooms.

After they get a little age on them, it is impossible to regulate the flow. They get hard to pull and they turn 'full on' when they finally come on. It's enough to get you a bath if your holding a glass under them, just needing a drink of water.

Moen, Delta and Kohler are good line with decent CS.
I've received no question parts from all three and AmStandard too. But I'm not as impressed with AmStandard as I once was.
I'm very extremely unhappy with the CS from Hans Grohe. I wouldn't buy again.

One thing to consider is that better brands of faucets have lifetime warranties.

We have a Grohe in the kitchen - the kind with the pull out spray head - over the ten years we have had it, we have had the spray head replaced at no cost 4 times - just call and they send out a new part.

Sure beats buying a new one every time.

I would buy one with ceramic disk valve(s) rather than washers or cartridges - no seals, seats ar washers to wear out. Look on the box.

I agree with the eBay recommendation - great deals on new plumbing supplies.

Another thought - I went to a local plumbing supply, they had a brand I did not know, very inexpensive, ceramic disk valves. They recommended it highly based on low to no returns and plumber feedback. Has been working great for a few years...

Another vote for MOEN according to my brother a master plumber. Our contractor however used Delta and now six years later the chrome is wearing away on the drain mechanism in the sink bottom and exposing brass I suppose.

Try to get Delta or Moen and try to get something made in the US. Some of Delta's stuff is from China
now. Delta single handles can be rebuilt over and over. I prefer a two handle in the bathroom.
Our Moen 2 handle has been going for 15 years, all I've had to do was replace a couple handle
adapters from when the kids were small and were reaching and pulling down on the handles
instead of a straight pull, naturally Moan gave me free parts, lifetime warranty.

As far as store brands, we bought a nice looking one at Lowe's for the kitchen with the pull out
handle, got it installed and it leaked up in where the copper tubes went into the base, defective
from the factory, took it back spent another $75 and got a Delta with pull out and
it's great.

Nooooo! Every plumber I've ever talked to (and that has been quite a few has told me that Kohler is garbage. It's too bad because they look and feel nice. We had some Kohler faucets in our house when we moved in. They all broke. My neighbor had the same experience. If you don't believe me ask a plumber.

I can second less-than-stellar experience with Kohler. I have a feeling they are the Sony of faucets - somewhat overpriced based on brand name but with average quality, but I really do not have enough reference points. Most of the faucets I bought were over $250 at HD or Lowes - not sure if this counts as value line.
