I'm watching Jim Carrey as Andy Kaufman in Man On The Moon (it's on AMC now). I'm not watching because I'm an Andy fan, but because I'm curious if I've missed something about his humor.

I think some of the things he did were so far from humorous as to be pathetic and absurd which is why I never really cared for him except for his Taxi role as Latka. I never understood his popularity or the whole wrestling thing either. So, am I alone in this feeling or were you confused too?

You are missing the "Both" voting option. There are many things he did that I found very funny. Then there were as many or more that were just plain stupid. And many bits he did could have been funny, but he just took them to the point they became un-funny.

A bit of both. Throw in performance artist and narcissist and you're getting even closer.

I liked Andy's work. Some of it I didn't get, but it usually was entertaining. Mostly.

So he basically did stand up and that one television show? I don't think I've seen enough of him to have an opinion. I seldom watched "Taxi", and the late night shows were always on too late for me.

he fits into the same category as Sash Cohen for me, sorry.

a huge group of people find him funny, and cutting edge. I dont. Not even a little.

the guy was a bit of a nut case... in the 70's, my old college roommate was trying his hand on the (aspiring) comedy circuit in L.A., and one night after the comedy clubs, we were in Canter's deli w/ a few of the comics, and wannabes, winding down after up until then, a rather uneventful night... when roomie and Kaufman got into what initially appeared to be a minor disagreement, but Kaufman kept verbally pushing roomie's buttons until it turned physical... now other than fighting w/ his little brother when they were kids, roomie wasn't a fighter by any stretch; but Kaufman on the other hand... (fighting w/ women, and all)... well, for no apparent reason, it got pretty ugly, w/ all witnesses stating Kaufman was the instigator. needless violence for the sake of attention. the opinion of him (Kaufman) went south for many of us after that.

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

There's a fine line between true genius and complete raving insanity. Andy was usually over the line towards true raving insanity. His comedy came out when he was under some level of control.

Truly sad... a few doses of some prescription psycho active drugs might have adjusted him enough so the genius could survive. But it didn't.

I've known a few people like that over the years. They're usually too "genius" to survive in the world, and they've come to bad ends in most cases. In a few cases they were saved through marriage to a strong(er) spouse that kept them alive and sane, whilc focusing their genius constructively.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet (or maybe it has and I missed it)

Sacha Cohen -- Ali G, Borat, Bruno -- is a successor to Andy Kaufman. If an currently active performer blurs the line between dangerous comedy and reckless, sometimes unfunny lunacy, carrying the torch that was lit by Kaufman, it's probably Cohen.

He died of lung cancer. Not sure what "psycho active" drugs or a stronger spouse could have done.

Don't know about the drugs, but perhaps a spouse around him all the time would have noticed the persistent cough and sent him to a doctor sooner. Since it was family at a Thanksgiving dinner that got him to go see one after finding out he had been coughing for a month. Or it might not have made a difference with the rare type of lung cancer he developed in spite of being just an occasional smoker.
