BBC World News has an anchor named Martine Coxhall or something like that. Not too shabby... Way better that Katie Couric, for sure.

As for Mélissa Theuriau? Hmmm, nice.

sscutchen, I'm sorry, but I would find it very difficult to take her seriously.

Sure, she's attractive-- very attractive--, but that's not necessarily what you expect from a news anchor... attractive is good, but I expect intellect, trustworthiness, worldliness, charm, grace (especially under pressure)-- the Peter Jennings standard, you might call it, since I think he set the bar pretty high. As far as female anchors are concerned, for that reason I like Elizabeth Vargas, who I think has all of the above qualities.

much as Don Henley's voice grates, the lyrics to that song are excellent.

A serious news anchor in the English-speaking world should not be named "Katie."
Nor "Waltie," "Eddie," "Danny," "Tommy" or "Petey."

I am not Ryan Seacrest, and I do not approve this message.

And you divined that she lacks these qualities from a picture? Sherlock Holmes would be jealous indeed.

While I give props to anchors who cut their teeth out in the field, being an anchor is being a news reader. And though Jennings was good, Walter is the standard, never matched. Not even a close second.

One can have a preference of who reads or how one reads the news to us, but in the end the news is the news, and usually not created or covered by an anchor.

Unless anchors are allowed to make up stories rather than read them, if one of them tell me there are bombers in the sky, I'll take it seriously whether it's a bubble-headed bleach blond, or even Dan Rather.

I don't care for the "buddy-buddy aren't we all clever" chit-chat that passes for accent by local news anchors, but I can still take them seriously when then tell me about a kid killed by a train while violating the Southern Pacific right-of-way.

So I'll withold my judgement until I view her actually doing the news.

And when I learn French.

RAMmie, you think I would divine all that from a picture? No. I looked at the videos, to which tronnei has thoughtfully posted a link...

But I do agree with you that Cronkite is the gold standard. I just thought of Jennings because of recent events.

Petey, no I knew you couldn't divine any of from her photo.

But I do think you are basing your "assessment" on your biases, rather than fact or her ability or inability.

Again, unless a new reader is going to make up the news rather than report what he or she is given, the qualities you "expect" from said news readers, it truly subjective, and ultimately irrelevant.

It boils down to a preference of how you want your news read, not what news is read.

RAMd®d, I only called you "RAMmie" as a term of endearment. Truly. (And partially because I'm not exactly sure, nor have I ever been exactly sure, what exactly a "RAMd®d" is.) There was no need to get petulant... I will stop calling you "RAMmie" if you prefer.

How do you presume to know this? I watched some of her videos; I found that she seemed more to be modeling, rather than newsreading, or being a journalist. But of course that was just my opinion... watch some of her videos yourself and see what you think. (To some extent you need to know French, obviously; but even if you only understand a smattering, you still get a decent sense of how she presents the news.)

Ah, but there I respectfully disagree. Would you take seriously a newsreader who read the news dressed in a bowler hat, suspenders, and a pink tutu?

I do think it's both. If the news is not credible even coming from a credible source (e.g., Dan Rather), it becomes unreliable. Conversely, credible news coming from a noncredible source (e.g., the Naked News) is no good either.
