And of course some people prefer not to publicize charitable donations, taking the view that gaining publicity from a donations takes away from the charitable aspect of giving. So just because you don't hear about someone giving doesn't mean they aren't.

Otoh, maybe publicizing the donation will goad others to pony and even up the ante for bragging rates. Wrong reason but I doubt people in dire straits care.

Yeah I wondered if part of the reason Sandra donated the $1mil was because her fellow NOLA residents Brad and Angelina also donated that amount. I was really thrilled when I'd heard she decided to come live here... I've always been a huge fan. And obviously, there's a huge outpouring of support for Haiti here... having not that long ago experienced another natural disaster of epic proportions, and having a substantial Haitian population here.

Goldman Sachs has pledged the same as Sandra. Pretty remarkable given that these folks at Goldman have only made a few billions this past year. Of course, so far it is only a pledge. The actual donation will probably depend on whether some exec may need to buy another home instead.

It probably hasn't occured to you that opinions like this can also lead to people (Like those "evil" Goldman Sachs execs) saying "Doesn't really matter what we do, we'll be lambasted anyway.... you know what? Screw it.... Let the high and mighty self righteous crowd donate this time.".

I've donated what I can now, and my next few paychecks will also have something budgeted for relief efforts.

Sure, that's the assumed motivation behind making big donations public. It's just that not everybody subscribes to that notion over the other. I can understand both perspectives, though personally I would subscribe to the idea of motivating others, even though it is too bad such a thing is even needed.

Alyssa Milano could only afford to give $50,000.

Movies must pay a lot more than tv.

I like Alyssa Milano's approach- challenging a corporation to match her donation. I think it's perfectly OK to be aggressive in that manner.

It seems a lot of people are concerned about what other people are doing to help.

What have you done, lately?

"...Let the high and mighty self righteous crowd donate this time."

It seems to me that the HMSR crowd is the first to criticize and the last to help, but if and when they do, they make the biggest noise about it.

And of course some people prefer not to publicize charitable donations...

True. Though that path may not motivate or goad, it does spare the donor the slings and arrows of others accusing them of not giving enough or ascribing self-serving motives to the donations.

Because really, when you get down to it, it nobody's damn business if somebody helps, how much they help, or why they help.

I don't care if it's Mom or Pop or the kids giving $5, or if it's a big corporation looking for a tax deduction. They're doing something. And disaster victims probably don't care either.

People need to spend more time worrying about their own damn character or lack of it.

Actually, I'm concerned that she's going to have to go back to guesting on sit-coms because somebody Madoff'd her.

Speedy is right.
It would be good to see a few other major corporations step up to the plate and knock one out of the park.

That was very nice of her...

I can only hope that the money actually goes to those who need it and not to some slum lord or corrupt government official.

Does the water taste better if it was funded by a celebrity? Does medicine work better? Money is money. Haiti is in a permanent humanitarian disaster (not unlike Louisana has been for centuries) the earthquake just made a bad situation worse, with satellite newsfeeds 24 hours a day. It's a shame it takes a geological crisis to make it possible for relief money to actually get to those in need. It's a start!
