The scenario.

October 1, 2010. Verizon makes iPhones available on their network.
October 2, 2010. AT&T raises their early cancellation penalty to $20 Bajillion dollars, retroactive to January 1, 2010. Because they can.

October 1, 2012. The very last AT&T iPhone user goes past his or her 2 year agreement limit, and cancels out.
October 2, 2012. AT&T sells their remaining cellular business to Verizon.
October 3, 2012 Verizon raises their rates.

They lowered the unlimited calls with data plan to $100/month. Doesn't include texting. AFAIK, the pricing on the other plans remains unchanged except for the 1350 minute plan which has been discontinued.

that plan will not help most until AT&T rolls in the unlimited texting. I get a better deal on my old plan.

It becomes more pratical if you have a family type plan.

be a cold day in h311 that i switch to verizon from ATT.

i know the rest of the USA seems to want to bitch about ATT, but they have been nearly 100% for me

AT&T lowered the unlimited calling from $99 to $69 per month. Add the $30 unlimited data plan and the unlimited minutes and data is now $99 per month. That is a $360 per year savings.

Discussions about cell carriers is like talking about Macintosh and Windows everyone thinks they are correct.

For the same price as the 500 minute/unlimited-data 3GS plan, you now can get unlimited voice and data.

For the roughly 1% of iPhone users who regularly go over 500 minutes a month, this has meaning.

Note that "unlimited data" is capped and still doesn't include text messaging.

Doc where did you get the 1% number? Data is not capped on the "smartphone plan". Text is extra but not all users use more then 200 per month. The cost of the Iphone plans are comparable to the cost of other smart phones.

It's a guess, but I think it's a good one. For most data and voice services, less than 2% of the customers ever exceed their plan-limits in a given billing period.

Just because AT&T does not disclose their cap doesn't mean that there isn't one. They've been talking about lowering the cap to a "soft" (enforceable at their discretion) 5GB for a couple of years now.

You think if you used 200GB of data in a month or downloaded a few GB via tethering or VOIP, they wouldn't cut you off or impose additional charges?

Me? I'm gonna sit here and make sarcastic jabs as the two biggest cellular providers in the country pretend to be in a price-war by lowering prices in a manner that's utterly useless to 99% of their customers and doesn't impact their profits the slightest bit.

Sorry. Typo. 'Changes nothing in regard to my point, to wit: "Smart phone" users are paying AT&T and Verizon too much money even with this bogus price-war.

if text was included i'd jump, you can change online with out having to extend your contract from what i saw.

Someday I'll get my first cell phone. I suppose.
