For me... because they're too small. And to have it sitting on the counter? Seems odd. Can't fit egg cartons or many other things into ones that small.

you live in a Brooklyn apartment, right? what about the smell from the compost pail, do you keep this pail inside the apartment???

There's a green plastic one on amazon thats 2.7 gallons. any larger than that and you might as well get a trash can with a good cover.

I'll go by the door until its taken out. and yes, that door is in the kitchen. as for composting egg cartons - you're more aggressive about composting than i am.

the smell of vegetable waste isn't particularly pronounced. animal products smell a hell of a lot worse.

I just received one for Christmas and it's great.

Only problem is that it's winter and the compost pile is frozen solid - and under snow.

in terms of smell, don't compost cooked food waste. in fact, you should be eating what food you have cooked, so there should be little to no waste. for meat scraps, I keep them in the freezer and throw away on trash day.

we don't have much of a choice about food/yard waste, and recycling here in Seattle. they can check and refuse to pick it up, or fine you, or both. Greenest city in the country.

I can still fondly remember my mother's compost pile, and the 'worm box' buried in the back yard that was the compost pile for cooked food waste and meat scraps. The neighbors tried to get her written up by the cops. There wasn't a law against it, and now she teaches classes on composting.

Of course she was raised on a farm in the depression, and you wasted NOT.

Looks like the pail we have. If you have an empty plastic coffee container like a Folgers 39oz it will fit into the container perfectly. It makes a great fit and easily cleaned.

I use the economy model...

I finally started a compost pile. I'm in the country, so it's just a pile at the edge of the yard. I'm not a big "green" guy so much, but it actually feels good to dump the scraps in it (less meat and cooked stuff).

anybody have some links to their preferred low-cost method of composting? I'm afraid of (1) stinking up the backyard so i won't want to go back there and (2) spending unnecessary funds. My mom did it recently and she just got a big plastic bin from Target, threw a freaking million worms in there, and, presto...

just start a pile in a corner of the yard.

smell really shouldn't be a concern unless you're doing something wrong.

compost doesn't particularly need worms. most of the work is done by microbes

ours starts with a leaf base in fall and then we bury the kitchen compost in it.
When the freeze comes I have a tumbler that I fill.
When the defrosts come and go I bury it in the garden which is covered with leaves such that the worms apparently stay pretty bust or else they get to it before I plant again.
The tumbler I have is old school and while efficient it s a bit of a pain to dump.
CostCo has a real nice one last year for $100 that I shoulda.

I use a plastic bucket . (when there's a lot)
Otherwise a Dunkin Donuts big clear plastic cup. (It's about 4 years old)
If you take the compost out to the compost pile every night there's an empty bucket/cup by the sink in the A.M.

Trying to rip egg cartons into 12 pieces must be tough.



If you cut the bead on a 15" tire and turn it inside out - compost pile wall. Several for height. I use 3' wire fence.

We have to recycle everything (compost in your own yard) here, too. If a bag weighs or smells tooo much they open it and if there's anything in there that doesn't belong you get to try again next week. We used to have to seperate all the recyclables - now just paper/cardboard seperate from metal/plastic.

I used to have a worm bin. It worked too well. I had no where to put the soil I was making.

How do you guys manage the compost pile area so it doesn't attract rats or raccoons?

Anyone have suggestions for (inexpensive) compostable, leak resistant bags or liners for a compost pail?

Coyotes seem to keep thier populations down ?
Haven't seen racoon prints in the compost pile snow cover for years. Used to see them, though. I'm willing to share as long as they stay out of the house.

I'm fairly certain that restricting animal products from your mulch pile will do the job. otherwise try mixing the food with non food compost, such as leaves, grass clippings, etc.

Rats and raccoons eat vegetables, fruit, nuts, will lick egg shells and even the worms slithering about.

They'll dig down to unbury a chicken carcass if it's not buried deep enough, they won't usually bother trying to unearth a turnip.

Meat, oil and fish are the most likely items to attract vermin.
The rest is just least likely.

Rats love corn and grain. Ask anyone in the Midwest.

mattkime, what's the model of that compost bin on Amazon? I've been thinking about composting for real this coming summer and would like to get set up. Other folks, if you have links, that would be great.
