Can only find old info on the web.

J.J. Abrams (sp?) to direct. "When Kirk Met Spock..." at Starfleet Academy is apparently the storyline.

I hate to say it.. since I've been a Star Trek fan my whole life...
But It's time to put a fork in this movie series. It's done...

The last three movies have been uninspired, and felt like everyone from the writers on down were just going through the motions.

If they make it, I'll watch it... of course.

If anyone asks me (and they never do), they need to do a Toho with Trek (Toho, which owns Godzilla, has put the big guy to pasture for the next 8 to 10 years, at which time they'll revive the series; they've done it more-or-less twice before).

If they have to start a new film series, I'd personally like to see an "After Enterprise/Before TOS" series, set during the time of the Romulan War. New characters -- maybe the Robert April/Christopher Pike days on the ENTERPRISE (1701). I still think Ray Liotta looks a lot like Jeffrey Hunter.

And FWIW, the final ep of ENTERPRISE (I basically stopped watching the series sometime during S2) should have ended with Archer, as an old man, christening the NCC-1701 USS ENTERPRISE. You could have had him at the launch, shaking hands with Robert April (the "shakedown cruise" captain) and, as the camera pulls back out of the dock window and across the saucer of the 1701, you hear the admiral saying, "Admiral Archer, I'd like to introduce you to the ship's new science officer, Mr. Spock..."

A good possibility for a series that got dropped was the "Captain Sulu Adventures", set in the timeframe almost immediately after UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY. Such a good episode of VOYAGER that was. [www.amazon.com]

I know, I'm a big nerd. FWIW, here's the Star Trek Wiki: [memory-alpha.org]

Zoid, there were rumors that that was one proposed ending for Enterprise-- the christening of NCC-1701 under the command of Capt. Robert April (to be played by Eugene Roddenberry, who looks a lot like his father), with a passing of the torch from a very old Adm. Archer. I wish they had done that ending, instead of what was actually done.

Myself, I think they should wait longer before attempting another movie. If it fails, that's really the end of the franchise. And I think they still haven't learned their lesson, that if they rush to make something, it won't necessarily be good. Part of the reason TNG worked was because people were expectant-- they really wanted something post-TOS... that's not the case right now. But of course, this is studio execs we're talking about here, and all they see is dollar signs, and they don't mind killing the goose to get the golden egg.

"When Kirk met Spock" is too hackneyed... the "Academy Days" idea has been bandied about for a long time, but it would too easily turn into "90210 in space", where it's just an excuse to have attractive young actors doing a soap opera in space.

If they were to do something more with the franchise, I would prefer something along the lines of a post-Voyager, 29th century Federation time-travel squad type of story. Something where they have to go back in time to maintain the integrity of the timeline. That gives them infinite possibilities in terms of actual storylines. And I would do a TV show, NOT a movie, as the movies tend to be too "cut and dry".

let trek rest for awhile.

Second, when it is revived, Manny Coto needs to be part of it, since the eps he directed of Enterprise were excellent.

Berman/Braga should not be allowed near anything Trek.

The next series or movie should be a reimaged TOS. As we saw in Enterprise, the 60s Enterprise and sets still hold up well.

The academy idea sounds like another snoozer. Nemesis blew, Insurrection blew, First Contatct was decent, and Generations sucked horribly.

It was like they hired people to write and direct Trek who had never watched TOS or they hated TOS. Thus the suckiness : )

No one who is not a fan and who isn't versed in everything Trek should be allowed near the director's chair. Nemesis was proof of that....

this is how it should start:

Amen to that.

Generations sucked horribly

Had they asked me (and they didn't), I would've shelved the YESTERDAY'S ENTERPRISE story and saved it for the first film. Instead of the 1701-C coming through the rift, it would've been the 1701-A.

(I wrote a neat little story synopsis for a college class back then, when I first saw YESTERDAY'S ENTERPRISE and realized it was a big oversight not to wait. It was an excellent episode, but it could've been *the* Trek movie and an excellent way to hand over the baton, as it were.)

Galaxy Quest was indeed a great TREK movie. Many argued that it shoulda been TREK VI as a farewell to the original crew.

I so looked forward to Nemesis, but it was just horrible. I would love to see another with the TNG crew and have them end on a better note.

Had Galaxy Quest been made using the actual Star Trek TOS actors, and the Enterprise (ST:TMP, STII, STIII era)..
It would have singlehandedly out-grossed the rest of the Star Trek franchise combined.

But then, I was one of the few that really enjoyed Star Trek: Enterprise, after it's slow start, and was sad to see it go.
It was just hitting it's stride when it was cancelled.

Paul, as many here know, I was a HUGE fan of Enterprise. Although I really liked the fourth season, I still thought the earlier seasons had merit... and most would agree that it really improved in the fourth season. Shouldn't have been cancelled, IMHO. If you watch any of the other series early seasons, you find that they're generally much worse than the later seasons... in particular, watch any of Season 1 of TNG, and you just want to gag...

Star Trek has always been great when the writing/directing has been there. When Enterprise finally starting to come together - it was too late, the fan base had already beamed away.

And as much as I had looked forward to the STNG movies - the last one was a major waste.

As a kid I grew up watching reruns of the classic. Liked STNG series when it came out. Really didn't get into Voyager originally - but enjoyed it, especially after season 2, on DVD - that said - Janeway never ceased to annoy imho. DS9 was not quite my cup of tea, but enjoyed most of it through season 6 - I don't think I've seen one S7 episode. The Classic Star Trek movies, enjoyed - but ST V probably could have done without - STII remains one of my favorites with STVI up there too. Generations - ok - First Contact great - the rest... the stories just didn't fit imho.

I don't consider myself a trekker so to speak, but do enjoy all of Star Trek.. and will admit that I be looking forward to seeing if they can bring back the original spirit with this next edition.

At the same time - BSG rocks. Dr. Who is ok. And Star Gate even still ok, if a tad tired.

With a name like Other World Computing - gotta know there's some Sci-Fi in us. smiling smiley

Hope Odd is the new Even.

For the first 9 movies the Even numbered ones were good and the odd ones not so good.

II, IV, VI, VIII are pretty good movies.

But I think X (Nemesis) was the worst of them all.

If Berman & Braga have anything to do with this it will be a total waste.

In case you haven't seen it (strong language warning!): [www.stardestroyer.net]

Tidbit re/NEMESIS: In the deleted scene (which should have ended the movie) where the new First Officer comes aboard; originally, Seven of Nine was to the be new First Officer. Jeri Ryan reportedly wanted too much money for what was a simple cameo, so the unknown guy was used. I thought Seven of Nine as the new First Officer would have been a pretty neat tie-in.

(Not popular, but I do actually enjoy the first one (ST:TMP). A lot better in the Director's Cut. Enjoyable novel as well.)

Uh oh, guys... I just heard it on the news, apparently confirmed that it will be a "prequel" of the first mission of Kirk and Spock.

Methinks this is going to suck royally... first thing that came to mind was, "How are they going to convince the audience of a younger version of Shatner and Nimoy?" I'm sorry, but I just cannot imagine anyone else in those roles. Even if they get people who physically resemble a young Shatner and Nimoy, it's not the same... I REALLY hope this is all some sort of big joke.

Who said anything about new actors? I little bit of makeup and a lot of CGI and Shatner & Nimoy can play 50-year younger versions of Kirk and Spock. ;)

tronnei, I can just imagine it now:

Younger Spock: "Jim, listen to me, you're my friend, you have to believe me. I can't do it. Why? Because it hurts! I'm trying right now, and it's not working. We'll have to cancel the date. Aleve? Sure, I'll try it."

Younger Kirk: "Priceline.com. Name your own price. Oh wait, wrong schtick. Denny Crane!"

Ralph's right. Star Trek is just plain tired. It needs a long(er) rest.

Abrams is a talented guy, and I really like Lost, but he's got a lot of weaknesses as a plot writer. Alias became a complete mishmash pretty quickly, and Lost has that "what weird s#it that we don't have to explain can we cram in this week?" stench to it (not unlike Twin Peaks). The horrible Superman scripts that he wrote don't exactly fill me optimism, either.

If I were Paramount, I'd have called Ron Moore and told him to name his price.

"Master and Commander" is a great example for what a renovated Star Trek should be: tough men on the frontier, at the edge of their own technology and skills. I doubt that's what we'll get, though.

Russel Crowe as Kirk, Colin Ferril as Spock. Beyonce as Uhuru, Jet Li as Sulu, Jack Black as McCoy, Jude Lawe as Scottie, Robert DeNiro as the Dean of the Acadamy, fill in the blanks. This is going to be a silly movie.

With the all the good Trek books and storylines that go outside all the prior movies/tv series - why not a new story with a new cast and crew. I kinda agree that any sort of prequel gonna stretch things. Enterprise was hard enough to get used to. Move it forward or go way sideways in some part of history... or whatever...

Maybe a longer rest isn't so bad.

I hope they do end up doing more FireFly movies or maybe bring that series back to TV.

A bit late to the party here, but add my vote to the "just let it end" side. I'm pretty old school when it come to anything Star Trek and I never really got into anything post TOS besides STNG (although I was always hoping that someone would eject "Counselor Cleavage" out an airlock.)

I lost interest rather quickly in Voyager (didn't that thing have landing gear or is that just a deluded and foolish false memory of mine?) and Enterprise just seemed a little to gung-ho for my tastes, although I am a bit tempted to try that one again once I forgive them for putting ears on the Andorians.

It's probably just since it's the one I grew up with, but nothing else really ever seemed to capture the spirit of the original series.

And besides, could you really ever imagine Janeway yelling "Khan!"
