What Do I Do With Sump Pump Runoff?

Last eyar I had my basement waterproofed with a perimeter drain. SYstem works great, but the problem is my Sump runoff. Right now the water discharges onto my lawn and my neighbors lawn. We did it that way because that is the natural slope of the land and we figured the water would run that path. There is no way for me to run it down to the street as my lot is wierd. I cant run it down to the end of the driveway due to length and property restrictions. The only way to do that would be to break up my driveway, and that aint happening. If I were to put a drywell at the end of the sump pipe, bury some rocks in the ground, would that help? Anyone have any ideas?

At least for a temporary solution, could you get a length of flexible tubing from home depot and re-route the drainage somewhere else?

this isn't a perfect solution, as you have to keep moving the pipe whenever you mow the lawn, but it might buy you some more time w/o flooding out that section of your yards.

Try to divert the runoff from your neighbors property, that is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

A french drain should work fine, make sure it is large enough, and slopes away from the house.

A Dry Well is a good idea. Here's a link:

I would think that the water from the drywell would make its way back into your sump pump and not solve the problem. Is it causing a problem in your yard or your neighbors?

It just keeps the ground extremely moist, kind of swampy. On the plus side, the areas that are affected by this water are a lush green while the rest of their lawns look like crap, literally. Its a huge difference. I was thinking of putting a drywell in at the end of the run, bury it 2-3 feet, and hope it leeches into the ground. I dont imagine it would end up back in the sump, since I get the runoff from everyone above me, and this spot is lower.

nothing will back up in the sump with the appropriate check valve. It might just cycle out and back in, though.

Hmm....
Install a "yard sump" tank and a another pump connected to a full yard drip irrigation system?

You'd need some sort of overflow system though.. you don't want to be watering your lawn when it's raining.

Best way is some way to pump it off your property into a gutter or storm drain, but that might take real work (not picturing your yard/property very well...)

Ok...in this image:

My sump pipe exits at the left edge of the driveway onto the lawn. From where I am standing taking that picture, behind me is one of my neighbors house. Directly in front of my house is another house. My house is sandwiched between these two houses. To the front left is a set of twins (visible in picture), and to the rear left is another set of twins. My driveway extends down to the street, probably 100+ feet. Does this make sense? I know its quite hard to picture.

Could you split the output line into several lines and place them at several places on the lawn? Might be able to get a whole lawn looking good without the swampiness...

You know, I look at the back of this structure, and it screams "DECK! I NEED A DECK ATTACHED TO ME!"

Don't you think so? Perhaps a door between the two windows also, for access to a multi-layer deck.

I think it would look good and hide those twin Mk IV bombs you have leaning against the house.

Dry well.
Maybe dry well with a leech field.

Some towns won't allow run-off and require a holding pond.

Do you own enough property on the side of the house opposite the driveway to put in a French drain on the front side of your house to try to catch the water percolating down the hill ?
This would theoreticaly take a good percentage of the sump load , IF this is where a majority of your basement water is coming from.
I'm assuming your foundation is acting as a dam for water traveling over hardpan down the hill through the top soil..

If your sump pump is discharging close to your house foundation, you may just be recycling the water around and around. That is what was happening to my house when we moved in. The critical thing to do is get the end point of discharge away from the foundation. That way the water that is pumped out won't just get back into the perimeter drain.

What I did was to attach a 2" flexible hose to the end of the discharge pipe. When we are in the rainy seasons around here(early spring and late fall), I uncoil the hose to full length (about 20') and let it discharge into the middle of my lawn. Once the rain is less frequent, I just coil up the hose and let it sit. By then the sump is no longer pumping.

Dry wells made out of rocks don't work (very well).

I've used a 55 gal plas drum, backhoe a hole twice the size surrounding barrel with crushed stone about 1 inch dia. Lots of 1/2 inch holes in the drum.
Top of drum about a foot below grade. Remember where it is ( I wrote on the basement wall). They make drums with access ports just for this purpose.
If your sump water is dirty the drum might need cleaning out of sediment. Access without digging is a plus.

The pre-fab drywells also can have a vent on the top sticking out of the lawn for overflow so you can plumb the sump directly to it with out an overflow break.

And since nobody mentioned it- check yer local planning and zoning rules. Water rights are usually pretty well spelled out.

Nah, those are the older MK III Block B bombs.

Not that I would have any knowledge of explosives.
