Rob,

Definitely not. It's a "you get what you pay for" situation more often than not. I use Ritek, Taiyo-Yuden, Verbatim and Samsung media, all 8x white inkjet printable DVD-R. I sometimes use Verbatim 2.4x DVD+R Dual Layer. This is regular media. So far, all of these have performed well and not suffered any data loss over time.

The same cannot be said of media from Hewlett-Packard, Memorex, ProDisc and generics like Teon. The media either didn't burn properly or the media went bad after X amount of time. ProDisc and HP media was especially bad. Never again for either brand. Same goes for Memorex.

I usualyl get media from Supermediastore.com or Meritline, depending on which of my favored brands is on sale and/or what kind of deals on it are available when I'm ready to place my order. Typically, Supermediastore.com is my primary vendor when it comes to media.

incognegro,

An unnecessary and uncalled for answer. Rob's question was reasonable question considering brands you'd think are good may prove no more or less reliable than cheap generics.

I've had very good luck with branded media (T-Y, HP, others)-- very poor luck with generics. But the burner is definitely also a factor-- I've noticed that my DVR-109 is relatively finicky with media, whereas my new DVR-111D is a real trooper. (And yes, the DVR-109 is now updated with firmware.)

If it is something I don't care about then I use whatever is on sale.

If it something I want to keep I break out the Verbatim Datalife disks I have that have a lifetime warranty. Looks like DatalifePlus was one the top rated disks for a variety of speeds.

I think all the DVDs will fade if you leave them in the sun though.

Some guy was doing dashboard tests and some brands were good for 6 hours in the sun, some were more like 300 hours.

I've had the best luck with Fuji and TDK 8x DVD-R's from Circuit
City. I bought a stack of NexxTech's from Circuit City and
couldn't get any of them to burn correctly.

I prefer Taiyo-Yuden from Supermediastore.com.
Check this week's deal, 100 for $30 shipped free.
