Riddle me this on memory and the new MacPros....
Posted by: samintx

On my PC laptops I get buy just fine with the minimum amount of RAM supplied at purchase. Never have upgraded the RAM...never needed to.

Macs on the otherhand eat RAM like Wheaties...and I never have been able to have enuf....

With the MacPro what happens to the RAM? is it necessary for a run of the mill person like me to have more than 1G? Just running Graphic Converter not memory hog graphics or games?

The Dual Core doesn't require extra RAM? past the 1G?

For Intel-native apps, 1GB of RAM is fine.

You will want more than that if you run a lot of apps in Rosetta.

PCs also fare much better when they have >512MB of RAM.

Then from the Rosetta blurg I can "crossgrade" for 49.00 and run Final Cut 1.0 (which I have and I think 1.5) Running these programs with Rosetta requires more memory (duh) Rosetta is interesting. Would love to try it on some programs.

So....upgrade to 2G would be recommended just in case. I think when I get my machine I'll probably buy from Apple because I don't think there will be any "deals" on these new machines, do you?

My Dell POS at work is starved with 512 MB of RAM. I am running 5+ apps including resource hogs like Outlook at any given time.

I bought another gig and it is much better. Same goes for my Macs at home. 1.75 gigs in the MDD. Usually running 10+ apps on that machine.

I think 1 gig is the minimum RAM requirement for any new machine.

DO NOT buy the ram from apple -- and check to see if Amazon is running their rebates before buying...

I bought my macbook ram from OWC.

PCs use virtual memory quite freely which is why you can get by with less ram than on a Mac.

$150 rebate on the MBP 15" at amazon -- so the 17" will have one too -- maybe $200?

I hhave 1G in my Pismo 'cause that's all it will take. It runs fine in Tiger, even with Safari, Thoth, Mail, Photoshop CS and Dreamweaver MX 2004 running at the same time.

Mac's also use virtual memory quite freely, it just seems a bit slower than on a PC running Windows. But a PC that is using much virtual memory will seem quite a bit slower than one with more real memory.

It's all what you're used to.

A friend's daughter got a fast PC laptop of some flavor with XP Home. She complained it was slower than the older W98 laptop she just gave to a friend.

I put 2G in it, and she's very happy. Sped up very nicely. She probably could have got by with 1G, but she wanted 2 and paid for it.

My home Windoze box (a $299 eMachine 1.8GHz Celeron) is fine on 384MB with XP Home.

The POS 1.6GHz original Petium M laptop at work with Virus protection, personal firewall, automatic SW update, automatic backup SW is almost totally useless with 512MB RAM on Windoze 2000. And I only run iTunes and Firefox on the craptop and it struggles.

Yes. It all depends on just how many applicatons you are running.

My XP box at work has 2GB of RAM and when I open a copy of .Net (sort of like xcode) that has sat unused for a day or so, there's a 1-2 minute wait for it to swap in.

Similar times (but a bit less) for Thuderbird.

I've seen the same behavior with IE.

The VM system on PCs is for crap.

I'll take the occasional pizza-wheel on my Mac any day.

Yeah, the VM system in Windows is total crap. It's like classic Mac OS, for cripe's sakes -- forcing you to manually adjust the swap disk space as needed to get optimal performance out of certain apps (I ran up against this with AutoCAD 2005 last week).
