Short answer: no.

Longer answer: depending on a NUMBER of factors (a high number), it's possible.

Here's what you can do to give it a shot. The only cost is a little of your time.

1. Create slideshow in iPhoto. Save and export as QT movie (.mov).
2. Download and install (read directions!!) the free FFMPEGX.
3. Drag the QT mov file to FFMPEGX's icon in the dock. Once open the summary page will have the QT movie's info on the left, and you should pick VCD (if longer than 30 minutes up to a max of 60) or SVCD (if shorter) to convert to.
4. Choose settings (I'd leave them largely alone) and encode.
5. You should end up with a VCD or SVCD .img file. Disk Utility can burn this.
6. The acid test: some DVD players can play such disks. Many can't.

(Alternatively, you could simply drop the exported slideshow into Toast 7, choose VCD or SVCD and press "Record.")

Why not buy a simple external DVD drive. I did this by buying an enclosure and a Panosonic (I think 109) all for under $80. Now I use both my combo drive on my ibook and the dvd drive. Works great. Then you could use iphoto to do the slideshow and send it to idvd for burning.

martystickle-

which OS/idvd started supporting 3rd party external drives?

i know that dvd pro supported 3rd party external drives but didn't realize that was an option w/idvd.

if my ilife '05 supports 3rd party drives, maybe that is the way to go.

i'll start checking the deal sites for exteranl fw dvd burners.

thanks for sharing your experience

be well
