OT: Do things need to be marked "Off Topic"

There are a lot of things in this category that certainly don't fall within a "Tips and Deals" category. Some are pretty obvious by the subject, some not.

Does there need to be a voluntary "OT" marking?

Or a "SOT" or "SWOT" for "Somewhat Off Topic"? Or a "MBOT" for "Might Be Off Topic" or "ITOT" for "I Think Off Topic" or "Is This Off Topic" for those uncertain entries?

Or is it just a free-for-all? Or should the two categories just be merged into a single forum?

Preference? Vote?

No "OT". For god's sake, if someone is offended by reading a thread that is "off topic" they can go to another forum. Please let's not start that circus over here.

Personally I have always felt that the "OT" thing was some sort of passive aggressive nonsense.

I think OWC Larry said they were working on an OT flag but until then people can figure it out for themselves. It's not like marking OT right now will do anything.

I sincerely doubt that anybody at the other forum ever even used the @!#$@#@! OT filter so there's no point.

The choice is yours. If I feel my topic is OT I'll mark it as such.

Some days I go looking for the OT topics as I don't want to deal with computers/deals as much.

At another place it seemed that there were so many off-topic posts that it would have been easier instead to have "OT" stand for ON-TOPIC and mark those instead.

However, the off-topic posts are usually the more interesting anyway.

I used the OT filter. Not all the time, but still, I did use it when the general mood was pissy or the forum was full of in-jokes and "Six minutes into..." threads.

I haven't seen a need for it here. Not yet.

I wonder if there is anyone who can look at a topic like "should I buy an Accura or a Lexus" and not know that it is not about Macs?

We really don't need micromanagement - IMO, if it makes you feel better to mark it OT, go ahead - but it won't offend me if you don't.

The LESS interference . . . the BETTER . . . Don't you usually want LESS involvement from figures of authority when you are trying to get REAL WORK done????? What's the difference here?????

If you feel like marking your post OT, then by all means do so. I don't think (and I hope) that this forum will ever get so *^%#$%&** messed up like the 'other place' is/was, so let's try and keep it as different from there as possible. The lesser amount of formatting suits this place just fine.
