No and that was a loooongg time ago. 1967. I believe I was the last class to have mandatory ROTC in 63-64 for Land Grant schools. I just had to pass the Army Physical to get drafted.

I'm just wondering, though. Uh, is it really enforced? I mean, we have leash laws too, but I don't see very many dogs/cats/naked mole rats being restrained by them (here).

I wonder what other odd college rules there are?

Urban Legend, per snopes, but REAL per my dad's Alma Mater, Columbia's site. Note the 'waiver' requirements.

All Columbia College students have a two semester physical education requirement and are also required to pass a swimming test (or submit a waiver from the University Health Service), prior to graduation. The swimming test is administered the first day of physical education classes and periodically throughout the semester. The test consists of swimming three laps of the pool (75 yards) without resting, using any stroke or combination of strokes. Those students who do not pass the test are encouraged to take beginning swimming at the first opportunity. The focus of this requirement is to make our students safe in, on, and around water. Barnard, Engineering, and General Study students do not have this requirement.

I went to NCSU and freshman PE class was required by all students. To pass the classs you had to pass the swimming test.

SO .. yes in 1988 anyway.

Steve, you a colgate grad. I am (class of '95) and had to pass a swim test. I was pretty hard for those who aren't strong swimmers... 4 laps in the pool, something like 5 mins of treading water, then another 4 laps. I chose to do it my freshman year (I figured i would be in worse shape by my senior year, all the beer and all)... the "instructor" watching me do it got bored after a few mins of me treading water, decided that I was a strong swimmer, and let me leave.

My alma mater has a swim test/PE requirement similar to Columbia's.

My alma mater did too. Still does, I believe

I couldn't swim, so I took the swim class instead. It was no big deal.

I didn't have to for college but everyone in my elementary school had to take and pass a two day "drownproofing" class.

I'm not sure if it was formally a graduation requirement but we were told we HAD to go and there could not be any waivers (a la parents saying no like in sex-ed). If you were sick you had to go on a weekend,

It was a very simple thing to pass and I really couldn't picture anyone failing it. The hardest part was watching the really thin kids try to float for the two minutes necessary

For the record this class made sense, I grew up in Maryland, on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay. I don't think there was anywhere in our county tat was more than a mile away from a boday of water. I graduated high school in 1994 and probably took this class in 1988.

Having been around water my whole life, my biggest piece of culture shock when I went to college wasn't meeting people of different races, or religions, it was the first time I met someone who couldn't swim. I just couldn't figure out how this was possible. I remember asking how they graduated elementary school. This was when I learned the drownproofing requirement was not universal.

Penn State didn't require any swimming test, but allow me to rant about their phys ed credits for vets.

Marines: 6 credits (logical)
Army: 3 credits (OK)
Air Farce: 3 credits (What?)
Navy: 1 credit (Huh?)

How the heck do flyboys get more credits than squids?

So, I had to take gym class as a returning adult student after six years in the Navy. The only good thing about it was that I took a beginning Karate class, which eventually led to a black belt.

UNC does as of now but is ending it in the fall. My wife got out of it since she had rowed crew in her first undergraduate program.
