Two 20" LCDs or one 24" widescreen LCD?

Right now I'm struggling with the decision between two Dell 2001FP LCDs or one 2405FPW for a home office. They'll be about the same price so do I trade the "simplicity" of a single 1920x1200 panel for the extra pixels that the dual 1600x1200 LCD setup affords?

I'm replacing my dying 21" Apple Studio Display and looking at the the display areas it seems that the 20" LCD will have roughly the same area as my CRT - 16x12" and the 24" would just be wider at 20x12 inches. So either way I go will definitely be an upgrade...

I know a lot of folks here have dual LCD setups and many have larger widescreen LCDs so I'd appreciate hearing pros and cons from both - thanks!

BTW - I spend most of my time in the Adobe Creative Suite and iLife apps; not much gaming at all, I use my MacMAME cabinet for that winking smiley

2X20"

I love multi-screens.

You can also buy a really cool adapter to put multi-screens on one ergo arm.

Dual screens might allow for work continuation if one fails.

I really enjoy having 2 screens, my 15" $5.00 LG LCD Flat
Panel and my 17" Apple Flat Panel Display. Not sure if I
could go back to one even if it were a 24".

Hey BGnR: Thanks for that link. I've never heard of the place. Neat stuff, especially the chairs:

Out of my price range.

Depends on what you're working on. For CS2 apps I'd say go dual - you can have your work in one monitor and palettes/finder windows in the other. For ilife, there are not really many palettes - so one larger monitor would be more useful.

Having a large main work area is just as important as having a larger total number of pixels. You always wind up choosing one screen or the other for the main window you're working with.

I recommend the 24" and a smaller secondary screen like a 17" DELL (which makes a great complement to the 24" if you rotate it 90 degrees and leave it in portrait mode all the time.

You get 2944x1200 (plus 80 px of vert on the rotated 17").

I have my mac running into both, and a PC running into the VGA of the 24"

I vote for the twin screens. If the Dells are rotatable, as mine are, you can change the orientation to meet your needs.

I like Jim's idea. The main one large monitor is still more useful than two.

Jim: when you set the 17 to portrait mode, did you have to install any software? Or is it automatically recognise by OS X?

It is easily done by adjusting the monitor prefs in OS X.

Rotating is in Tiger Sys Prefs, not Panther, though some video cards provide the functionality regardless of X flavor.

I think rotating requires an ATI GPU (not Nvidia), but not sure on that.

I use a Dell 24" along with my previous Apple 17" Lcd, both powered by the stock video card in my G5.

They look just like my sons 17" UltraSharp but I believe Phy's
displays are bigger than 17". Those Dell Ultrasharps are nice!

2-20" monitors would be more useful for me. I would have a spare in case one were to fail.

Buy.com has one of the dual monitor arms (two screens side-by-side on one arm) for a lot less money than the ErgoBoys. It comes up on the Dealmac home page every now and again. I'd love to go for that, but I'm trying to be good and save some money.

If I were to upgrade my display, I'd probably go for a single 23-24" one myself for simplicity's sake; I'm already running everything through a KVM switch and don't want to complicate things any more.

Just get a 30" and the question is moot

I don't know why anyone didn't mention this, but... keep your studio display and use it as a second monitor. Then get a 2405. That's what I did. As time goes on, I'll replace the old CRT with maybe a 30" LCD and use the 2405 as a pallet monitor.

Also, for rotating you MUST have an ATI video card. It will not work with an Nvidia card, Tiger or no Tiger.

The monitors are 19" Dell 1905FP models (with black tape over the Dell logos).
I love 'em!

My graphics card is an ATI.
