Posted by: Carthaigh

I got a $5k tax refund deposited into my bank account on Friday. What should I buy with it? I was thinking maybe 12 shares of google. Any other suggestions?

Buy me a car or a 17 inch Mac Book Pro

Resist the temptation to spend it on anything that depreciates.

Donate it to Chip.

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

Spend some of it on an accountant who can help you adjust your withholdings such that Uncle Sam doesn't keep $5K of your money interest-free for a year.

Break-even that's the way I like it. Actually owed a little
this past year. Nothing like having a good CPA at tax time!

Adjusting withholdings was not the problem. Excess social security taxes were taken out due to changing jobs. I usually come close to breaking even.

I'd look at a couple Exchange Traded Funds...

Do you have 3-6 months of wages socked away in an easily accessible account? Generally, experts say to have that as a rainy-day fund if you ever should lose your job.

Most of the ones I would recommend, I haven't been in long enough to be able to give you an honest recommendation...

But;
PTF
IWC
FXI

Do your own research... I am quite capable of picking loser stocks/funds...
