I cannot claim credit for the photos. One of my coworkers received them from offshore, and he forwarded them around the company. I appreciate your sentiment, but I am safe in my office.

The oil rig that was burning in the Gulf of Mexico is now under water.

"The oil rig did settle beneath the water," Coast Guard Lt. Commander Cheri Ben-Iesau said. "It was burning and kept sinking lower and lower and lower and it did finally at 10:21 sink below the water line."

I think they would rather have the oil.

Sad to see such a big disaster with so many people injured/missing/dead. Did they let it sink on purpose to put out the fire, was it flooded by the water from the firefighting effort, or...?

The fire was being fed by gas and oil from the well, so they had no way to extinguish it. I suspect it is still burning on the water's surface. They are in deep water, so it will be a while before they can get something on site to shut down the well. Rumor had it they were in the process of completing the well when it blew. They were not drilling.

I see this is being called the world's largest oil rig, but how big is it? I don't mean how big in terms of capacity, but I'm curious about its physical size - like how many city blocks, acres, etc. would it cover if on land? I can tell it's enormous, but I'd like a better idea of how enormous.

As far as 'still pumping oil', I believe deepwater rigs are equipped with well head safety devices that automatically shut off the well at the head (which is 10,000 feet underwater). So the only oil spills will be from oil in tanks on the well, and oil in the drill pipe leading down to the wellhead. And yeah, that long a string of 5 inch inside diameter pipe is only about 30 cubic meters of oil. Assuming compression you'll get a bit more.

But you're not talking about an unending plume of oil bubbling up from the sea.
