OT: Okay you Blaine(iacs), who can figure out how he's pulling off his latest stunt?

I loved a show a few years back called Magic's Biggest Secrets Finally Revealed. Really interesting stuff to learn about.

After a week submerged his skin will be like mush, no way they could chain him up without shredding his skin.

And as for his "breatholding" record attemp if they carfully adjust the oxygen levels in the air he is breathing during the course of the week they can raise the oxygen levels in his body enough to allow him to eclipse the record easily.

Will be hard to speculate until we see the video.

If he is really underwater then the only way to cheat would be to somehow conceal a source of air to his lungs. I know he will have that tube for the week, but his 9 minute stunt seems crazy. 9 seems like too much because it is a medical fact that your brain will begin to die after 4 minutes without oxygen, so 9 could mean serious brain damage. Wether or not Blaine has a brain is another thing.

I guess the best explaination would be that he is a robot, this seems to work for most things.

Maybe they will oxygenate the water so that he can breathe by taking water into his lungs.

I once held my breath for five minutes after hyperventilating for 15. I was surprised how easy the first four minutes were.

Hyperventilating saturates one's blood with oxygen to a much higher degree than does normal breathing, which allows one to go longer without breathing. There are additional techniques which enable one to go up to 15 minutes without breathing: [www.scubaboard.com]

That is 4 minutes AFTER your brain runs out of oxygen, the lungs, blood, and body tissues hold plenty of oxygen. As the article says, the current world record is 8:58.

Yes, obviously it is possible, as the article states (I did read it you know). I'm just saying that it seems like 9 is too long because of the very real chances of brain damage.
I'm not saying that it's impossible, or everyone that does it will get brain damage, or that anyone who claims to have done it is a liar.

He could still be a robot though.

I do something everyday that Houdini taught me and that my wife loves.

BELCH

Houdini would swallow air to burp up and breath. I used to practice holding my breath and swallowing air to belch/breath. It also allows me to vomit on command or just regurgitate.

I learned two things today:

1. Doug Henning is dead.
I didn't know what had happened to him, so after I saw the photo brofoski posted I googled him and was sorry to see he had died. It sounds like he sort of went off the deep end the last decade or so.

2. The 1953 Tony Curtis movie "Houdini" is not available on DVD.
I would like to see that movie again someday. It was totally ridiculous, but fun -- in that 1950s fake history sort of way -- as I recall.
