A simple statement of guidelines would be helpful--perhaps someone who gets censored occasionally, but understands why the mgmt. would do that, could take a first stab at it.

Emotion seething through the restrained speech in your post. You seem to be saying someone is altering posts (censoring) and you protest it. And you seem to be implying the owners of this forum are beginning to show a self-serving philosophy.

I must be naive because I haven't seen any such issue here. What is the problem?

As a guideline for removal, in the tips and deals forum, we want to keep it at or around a pg-13 rating.
This would allow mild/borderline swearing meaning that if the words used are allowed on broadcast television, then we can allow it. By broadcast television, I mean channels like FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, WGN, etc. NOT channels like HBO, SHO, PBY, etc. As a rule of thumb, before hitting the post button, think about WWFCCDJJ (What Would the FCC Do if you were Janet Jackson?). Nudity is a definite no. There will be arguments, or differences of opinion, and that is both fine and expected. No posts will be deleted for this as long as you abide by the above swearing/nudity rules.

For the friendly political forum, this can be an R rating. If it can be shown on European TV, then we can have it, in this forum only. The political forum is also the "dumping ground" for questionable content on the 'Tips and Deals' forum. So if you made a post that does not agree with the rules, and all of a sudden it is gone, please do not scream censorship without checking the political forum.

Forum editing. There is to be no editing of any kind other then replacing cuss words or removing images from posts that violate the above rules. No modification to wording to "tone it down" is acceptable. If you feel this has happened to you, please pm me ASAP. In the event of a rogue mod, we do log all moderator actions just in case.

If you have something I did not cover here, please post a reply to this thread.
We are all adults here, well maybe not microchip but we can make you an honorary adult, so please act like it. If you just want to piss people off, please visit somewhere else, get it out of your system, then come on back.

Thanks for that post Jim. Especially the part about no content editing to tone a post down. I'm glad we have published guidelines to live by.

Here we go again. I guess a couple of weeks without "OT" and "censorship" complaints was the most that I should have hoped for.

Geez, can I be an honorary child instead of an adult? winking smiley

Otherwise, I'd say: well-said.

jimmy, my feeling is that the mods want to keep things civil, but civility does not require that everyone agree on all subjects... it is possible to make a post with a strong opinion, with strong convictions, but to do it in a nonoffensive, nonaggressive way (not saying that you haven't done that, just speaking generally). Likewise, it is possible for all the respondents of the post to address you respectfully, even if they disagree with your opinions... it's when the respect degenerates into name-calling and ad hominem attacks, that there is a problem. But it's generally an avoidable problem... it can be headed off at the pass, so to speak.

I do agree that there ought to be intervention on a post before there is any alteration... e.g., "could you tone that down a little?" -- makes a lot of sense to me, and is representative of a friendly forum atmosphere. If the poster doesn't respond well to that (and I'd guess, 95% of the time, s/he will, most people here ARE adults), then the post can be altered without their agreement, since they're behaving like a horse's behind.

Also, something else worth mentioning: this is a new forum, it's not like there aren't going to be settling-in adjustments. Wait awhile and see how things go...

Censor away as long as you don't censor me.

Whoa, already this censorship idea is being taken too far. Might as well be on that other forum.

You should be able to post pics of your ankles w/o causing a stir.
That's nudity as defined by the FCC. which is basically genitalia and mammaries.
If you can't find that elsewhere, well, I won't say it ...

One more thing/rule.
If you are going to post nude pictures, and i know some of you are going to, all that we ask is that you do two things.
1- post it in the political forum and
2- mark it NSFW (Not Safe For Work) in the subject.

and send me the link to it so i can confirm it is within our "guidelines" smiling smiley
It's a dirty job but i guess i'll take one for the team.

Thanks

Yes she does. She lurks the forums on occasion.
If she's reading this, i only view the adult-themed pics in a courteous, professional manner and it is an aspect of my job that i do not enjoy but must do none the less.

Hey, we should just call this the PG-13 and R forums, then.

The R require you to acknowledge you are about to enter the R section. perhaps store it in a cookie, too.

Forum for Kiddies and forum for adults - I won't say which rating is for which one. smiling smiley

I've had as many PMs from mods here in two weeks as I've had at AppleSwitcher in two years (yes AS does have mods and they do sometimes moderate).

Does that make me an internet sociopath? If FCC guidelines are the benchmark, you'll end up with a forum composed of Clear Channel users with no room for the likes of Howard Stern or even George Carlin.

Is that what you want here?

I fergut to mention the wine was bottled under the Grateful Dead label so while the contents could permanently disfigure the tastebuds of the most dedicated Ripple and Thunderbird consumer, the containers are collectors items.

Well they are for Deadheads anyway.

My complaint about Mr. Jimmypoo

Let's start this letter with a little quiz:

1. How can someone who claims to be so educated and so open-minded dare to impose batty new restrictions on society just to satisfy some sort of logorrheic drive for power?
2. Why doesn't Mr. Jimmypoo point a critical finger at himself for a change?
3. Essay: Compare and contrast Mr. Poo's ploys to those of the most stingy carpers you'll ever see, focusing especially on who is more likely to render unspeakable and unthinkable whole categories of beliefs about power.

Don't worry; I'll give you all the answers throughout the course of this letter as well as a wealth of other information about Mr. Poo. The points I plan to make in this letter will sound tediously familiar to everyone who wants to fight scurrility and slander. Nevertheless, some passive-aggressive wheeler-dealers are actually considering helping him reopen wounds that seem scarcely healed. How quickly such people forget that they were lied to, made fun of, and ridiculed by Mr. Poo on numerous occasions. One of the cocky remarks we often hear from him is that human life is expendable. Enough said.

Viewed from all angles, Mr. Poo's cause is not glorious. It is not wonderful. It is not good. I plan to work within the system to persuade my fellow citizens that within the deleterious milieu of sensationalism exists the opportunity for Mr. Poo to turn a deaf ear to need and suffering, not because I lack the courage for more drastic steps, but because his sermons have kept us separated for too long from the love, contributions, and challenges of our brothers and sisters in this wonderful adventure we share together -- life! He insists that he is entitled to confuse, disorient, and disunify. In the long run, however, he's only fooling himself. Mr. Poo would be better off if he just admitted to himself that his declamations have merged with imperialism in several interesting ways. Both spring from the same kind of reality-denying mentality. Both extract obscene salaries and profits from corporations that malign and traduce me. And both condition the public -- or, more precisely, brainwash the public -- into believing that everyone who doesn't share his beliefs is an ignorant crumbum deserving of death and damnation.

Mr. Poo's grievances are founded on bald-faced lies. You might insist I'm telling you this because I like to beat up on Mr. Poo. Really, that isn't my principal reason. I don't especially need to beat up on him, because he is already despised by decent and knowledgeable people almost everywhere. As reluctant as I am to admit it, I feel no more personal hatred for him than I might feel for a herd of wild animals or a cluster of poisonous reptiles. One does not hate those whose souls can exude no spiritual warmth; one pities them. I conclude this letter with an appropriate quote: "Most people are still loath to admit that viperine sociopaths do not deserve the assistance they receive from society." I believe we all know who said that, don't we?
