The vuvuzelas are certainly the most controversial theme of the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa. With a loudness of up to 120 db(A) and thousands of them used during the world cup games, they sound like a a swarm of monster wasps. It does not only make it nearly impossible for the soccer players to communicate acoustically on the playing field but does also annoy many fans who want to enjoy the world cup all over the world through television.

They're more controversial than the @#$%& balls they are using that the players are complain about because they are unpredictable?

I'd be concerned about hearing loss and it'd certainly make it harder for me to enjoy the matches.

an npr report a few minutes ago says the loudness is enough to cause hearing damage for anyone in the stands not wearing earplugs. some here in a previous thread claim it's not a big deal and simply turn the sound off it it annoys you. okay, fine. but why should someone in the stands have to wear earplugs to enjoy the game. second-hand smoke issue, anyone...

Such plastic trumpets have been around and at sporting events for decades; just not so many of them in one place all being blown at the same time.

I don't think the plastic trumpets you're talking about have quite the impact of the vuvuzelas, which are a uniquely South African phenomenon.

I am absolutely amazed to discover myself on this rock ball rotating around a spherical fire. It's a very odd situation.
