Back up over wireless network?

A couple of weeks ago I set up an old B&W (upgraded) as a very modest server. Mainly I keep it running so I can print wirelessly from my 17" PB.

Both computers are running 10.3.9. The B&W mounts on the desktop of the PB, and I can print without any problems from the PB, so I know the aspects of the setup that are most important to me are working properly. This morning I tried to take this one step further, but I ran into trouble.

I downloaded the latest version of Silverkeeper and set it to backup two small folders from the PB to the hard drive of the B&W. I get error messages. The first time I tried I got a "-43" (which I couldn't identify by Googling.) The second time I got an error about not having the proper permission.

What's going on? What I want to do is so simple that I've already backed up those folders just by dragging and dropping them. But, it would be nice to automate it so I wouldn't have to remember to do it every day.

Knowing me, I missed something really simple and basic. Any help in getting this to work through Silverkeeper would be appreciated. Thank you!

And I feel soooo at home here! smiling smiley

I was looking a few days ago at that Buffalo network-ready hard drive with built-in print server, it is supposed to do automatic backup and it also has an USB post for additional storage... for $250 or so it might be worth it. no need to mess with additional servers.

I know this doesn't answer your question, sorry for rambling

Are the errors coming from the OS or are they coming from Silverkeeper? I have never used Silverkeeper so I can be of little help there. Is it supported software? Do they have a forum or FAQ?

I assume you have repaired permissions on both machines.

New.Dad: I don't have anything important enough to justify spending "real money"! I should be grateful my little system does what I originally wanted, but I always have to push my luck. sad smiley

BT: SilverKeeper 1.1.4 says it supports everything from OS 9 through Tiger, so I should be OK on that count.

This is the first message I get, and I think it's providing the clue to the problem; I'm just too dumb to know how to get around it.

"Warning: Copying to "Scrappy II" (a Server (AppleShare) Volume) may lose some functionality.

Restrictions include:

File size over 2 GB not supported
Ownership & Permissions not supported.
Names over 31 chars not supported.

See SilverKeeper Help for possible alternatives."

SilverKeeper Help ain't helping me. If I click OK on that one and set up specific files for backup, here's what I get when I try to run it: (The error messages are showing up in the Silverkeeper window.)

First try:
Available: 35.02 GB
System Err (-43): Backup incomplete!

Second try:
Error: Insufficient access privileges

Neither of these folders are big; one is 1.9MB and the other 3.2MB, so I know I didn't go over the 2GB threshold.

There is an FAQ included in the download package, but it doesn't address the error messages I'm getting. And, because this is a freeware from LaCie, they have minimal support available. (You do get what you pay for!)

Why do I try this "fancy stuff"? I should know better.
