WoW ~!~ Ken, ~!~ I lived just off Stable Rd. for years. Fred was an inspiration and affectionately called the "forehead " by close friends. He occasionally dropped off Papio at the old Baldwin Estate. where I lived for awhile. He was really my windsurf fishing mentor.

We had some amazing daze in Speckelsville. Thats where my friend Rolly fishes now. Rolly was the best student I ever had, better than his teacher. But he still owes me money for 1st, biggest and most *(:>*. We bet a $1 for each category every time we fished together *(:>* We had some killer daze on the water.

BTW Fred also Sailed the famous "Big Wednesday" at Hookipa with some other notable boardsailers who lived for reckless abandonment *(:>*

Fred Haywood was also a world class AAU swimmer from Santa Clara College if i remember correctly

Ok, I give up. I've fished and I've windsurfed (but not like that!). Do you tie a lure to a hand line from the back of the board and troll? Inquiring minds and all...

Yup ~!~ KInda . We run a piece of 300lb test braided line thru a piece of surgical tubing. Ideally about 15ft of braided line is tied inside the 3ft of surgical tubing. Then 40ft of braided line is your mainline. Add a swivel or 2 and maybe 15ft of 125lb test monofilament. At the bitter end is a Pearl head lure and squid skirts with a double hook... Some guys use large hammered stainless spoons with a double hook. The mainline has a short tail at the head end with a hasp connected that we wrap around the foot of the mast . The mainline travels down the center of the board. While trolling. When a fish hits the lure the surgical tubing adds instant resistance, stretches and then you can usually feel the fish pulling on the line and the board. Big fish can almost stop the board. Guys usually sit on their board and bring the fish in. I keep a large game bag tied to the booms at the top with a clove hitch. At the bottom end of the game bag is a small piece of line and a hasp that I connect to the grommet at the foot of the sail. We wear water skiing gloves as the fish are slippery. We stuff the fish in the game bag tail first then remove the hook.

"The ForeHead" LOL. You would have to make sure your were good friends before you called him that. He is a large human, but very gentle.

I used to compete in speed events, and while I was usually nowhere near Fred's ability, I am proud to say I beat him at one Speed event at South Padre Island in Texas.

This was back when a speed course was 500 Meters long. The wind was a bit off and inconsistent, so rather than doing a full speed contest, the organizers set it up as your speed vs wind speed at that time ratio. I beat Fred for second place with something like 80% speed to wind speed ratio. It was fun, since the strong winds never came up, and I can meekly say, I beat Fred Haywood!! At the time he was as dominate in speed sailing as Robby Naish was in wave and course events--he owned it.

Sailed Kihei (wicked strong offshore wind), Kanaha and Sprecklesville, but since I wasn't much of a wave sailor I just watched at Hookipa.

I started sailing in 1981 at Kanaha. Purchased a Ken Winner book and basically taught myself. Watching guys like Fred, Mike Waltz, David Ezzy, Peter Cabrina, Jimmy Lewis, Craig Masonville and others I made good progress and became very addicted. Got in trouble at work several times because of big waves and big wind made me ditch work.

I sailed everywhere you mentioned. We used to love doing downwind runs from Hookipa to Kanaha.

Two other crazy sails were Kanaha to Mokuhukuniki Rock (sp) and back to the Harbor/ChartHouse for a beverage.

Another is channel Crossing Maui to Molokai. Holy Kama Sutra the Pailolo Channel can be fun.

Great to see you know Maui so well. Yes Fred was a very good friend and a gentle giant.

Nope---I wish--I was never good at longboards, and too big to be a good course racer like Ken Winner.

Baron Amaud De Rosnay disappeared on a channel crossing in China.
He was married to John Seversons' of (Surfer Magazine) daughter Jenna. Jenna was a Model and clothes designer. Jenna sometimes stayed at The old Baldwin Estate where I lived in Sprecklesville. She was/is very beautiful.

Haikuman- Thanks for that great explanation. I've always thought about pulling a Clark spoon for Spanish mackerel or bluefish when I was windsurfing at home in NC, but never got up the nerve. Are sharks ever a problem? (Attacking your catch).

One time a friend caught a very large Tuna while windsurfing, over 160lbs. By the time he got the fish to shore, he had to tow the Tuna in because it was too big to get up on his board there was a large chunk missing. He took the fish to "Mamas' Fish House" to be weighed. The Tuna was over 160lbs even with a mouthful missing.... caused by the "tax collector" as sharks are often called in Hawaii.

Came down to our local rigging spot and gave us all tips about rigging etc.

Back in the day I made it to Maui once and sailed Kihei (stayed at the Maui Sunset right on the beach) Kanaha, Spreks and a couple of other spots. I was too chicken to sail at Hookipa.

I remember that big Wednesday video.
