I too think that this is a major design flaw. USB devices are everywhere yet a pro item such as the MBP only has two USB ports?

It is called a USB hub. If you need more than 2 devices at once you obviously aren't mobile with it.

So what? The vast majority of us are not going to be using our MBPs on the go all the time.
As for the comment that it's a design flaw for a USB device to take up so much room at the port, I also use a 3G USB stick modem when I am on the go. As far as I know there are no slim 3G modems, if you know of any, let's have at it. In order to use that Vodafone 3G USB modem along with a USB mouse that I toss in my bag, I need to include a Belkin USB hub. If my MBP had THREE USB ports then I could do without the Belkin.
So, it looks like I am mobile with the MBP but its design forces me to bring along a hub.

BTW, do you even have an MBP? Do you know how hot it gets when it's in your lap? Try that when you're outside in your shorts and the temp is in the 90s.

Or how about this scenario? I'm in my car, I'm using the USB modem and I need to access files on my USB-powered HD? No can do in that ultimate "mobile" situation, eh?
Oh, I'm sorry, my bad for not splurging on a FW800-drive.
(FYI, that last was hypothetical because I do have an FW800-powered drive from OWC.)

Never had that problem. I have 2 MacBook Pro's right now and 1 ModBook. It is 85 out here by the Firepit in the back yard and the only thing hot is my feet from the fire.

Then I salute one of the few lizard-skinned denizens on this board!

You should probably get your MBP looked at. They don't get that hot.

Err... you don't need a USB hub, just a 3" (or longer) USB extension, which 3G modem manufacturers used to include, but I guess they got cheap and stopped doing that. The added benefit (some say) with the extension, is that you will also get better reception since it moves the antenna farther from the computer case.

In the end, when you're on the go the less stuff you have the better. Why should I carry around either the hub or the extension? As I said before, three ports would solve the issue.

I guess I just don't see the argument that Apple should cater to you at the expense of others. Should Apple spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in manufacturing costs and add an extra USB port just so you can save $5 and 2 ounces?

So it was removed and an SD slot was added, which more than half of the people who bought that model used. It is all just cost/benefit analysis on a large scale. You ( and I) are not part of the target market/majority of MBP purchasers.
