Please Help. iPad updater bricked my iPad now I need help deleting file

I updated iTunes and decided to sync my iPad. It said there was a new version of the iPad software, so I decided to update that, too. Well it downloaded and started the to install the update on the iPad, but it hung, gave an error message and now the iPad is a brick.

I read at the Apple support discussions that I should remove the update file and re-download, but I have no idea where the iPad update file is located. Here is what they suggest.

"go to the directory that contains the iPad Software update, delete it, and then restart iTunes. Try downloading the update again. A lot of issues like this could be caused by a corrupt installer."

If anyone could tell me how to do what they suggest, I would be eternally grateful.

Well, after a lot of work, my iPad is finally back to normal. I had to restore from my daughter's MBP, repair my MacBook's HD with disk utility, trash and reinstall iTunes and the Mobile Device manager, restore and re-sync the iPad with my MacBook and now it seems to be OK. I think the problem may have been with the Mobile device manager (I think that is the term) and iTunes, because when I would connect the iPad it would not launch iTunes or show in iTunes. Now that I have reinstalled both of those, it seems to be working correctly. Man, what a pain that was. I hope the update was worth it.

well that sucked, glad to hear you got everything straightened out okay.
It took me a good part of 24 hours to get my iPhone 3G up and running right after updating it to iOS4.

The Taoist Zhuangzi said, "Good order results spontaneously when things are let alone".
The sociologist, and historian, Adam Ferguson described the phenomenon of spontaneous order in society as the "result of human action, but not the execution of any human design".

Well, Apple seems to be screwing up big time lately with iOS4 and the reception thing. I think the last thing I want right now is an iPhone or iPad with all the attendant issues. I hope things settle down for you-that's too much work to go through to solve those problems!

To be fair, I think the problem may have been with my copy of iTunes and that mobile device manager thing. I don't sync my iPad veer often, no real need, so I don't remember if it was recognizing the iPad when I plugged it in the last time I synced or not. Since it worked the first time with my daughter's MBP, I think it must have had more to do with my MacBook than the update. But even so, it was a real PITA.

Now when OS4 comes out for the iPad, I hope things go more smoothly.

Are you running 10.6.4 on your MB? There have been some USB issues with 10.6.4. I have had to reboot my Mac Pro every few days as it won't recognize usb devices when they are plugged in on either the internal or pci usb ports. Devices that remain connected are fine.

No, I haven't updated to .4 yet, and after last night, I may wait a few days.

Well, 10.6.3 is causing issues on my iMac. It was running fine till I updated to .3. I'm afraid to update to .4-I don't know if it will fix the .3 issues or screw it up worse.
I just think there has been too many problems with Apple products lately. More so than I ever remember...
Here's a question for anyone: Can I use Time Machine to un-update my iMac? In other words, can I go back to before the 10.6.3 update using TM?

This should work for what you are wanting to do.
From Apple support:

[docs.info.apple.com]

If you’ve used Time Machine to back up your computer, you can recover your system’s contents if your system or startup disk becomes damaged.
To recover your entire system:
Step 1

Connect your Time Machine backup disk to your computer.

If you’re restoring your system because of a problem with your startup disk, make sure the disk has been repaired or replaced.
Step 2

Insert your Mac OS X Install disk, and double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
Step 3

In the Installer, choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup.
Step 4

In the Restore Your System dialog, click Continue.
Step 5

Select your Time Machine backup volume.
Step 6

Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore.
Step 7

Follow the onscreen instructions.

I have not updated this iPad, and I think I'll wait a bit before I do!

Thanks for taking one for the team, rgG!
