Every time I modify the file do I need to drop it into the Desktop DropBox to update the file?

all the files in the "dropbox" folder are synced automatically to the cloud, and even to other computers connected to the same account, and you can even go online to dropbox's web site to see previous version of those files, like in Time Machine (sort of...)

just to clarify: files inside the dropbox folder are taken care of automatically, files outside the dropbox folder are never synced.

Then I should be working on the file already in the DropBox?

Right. So if you permanently store that file in the Dropbox folder, it's always updated everywhere else (with network availability) whenever you save it.

Only problem is with apps (like FreeHand) that still use the old resource fork structure. Remote computers aren't able to open those files directly, so I have to ZIP them.

"Can't sync file in use."?
And 'orphan'?

What all those mean?

The former probably means you can't permanently store it thereā€”it's trying to sync while the file is open in your app. Dunno about the latter. Might be a side effect of the first.
