NPR covered this a bit better. It's called gamesmanship. Perhaps if you'd pointed out that DeMint is trying to stop the ratification of the START treaty, it would have gotten a bit more attention.

And puhleeze... EVERYONE plays politics with our National Security. Didn't someone on the 'for the treaty' side resurrect the "Daisy" ad from the LBJ era for this battle ?

You remember it.. the little girl picks up a daisy and gets nuked ?

The White House has been sitting on this for 8 months but now all of a sudden we don't have any time to waste. The rush of legislations in the lame duck is not a coincidence. On Tuesday they dump a 1900 page budget on everybody and want it passed by Friday. When did they write it? Over the weekend?

The ad, produced by Doyle Dane Bernbach, ran only once but it was played on so many network news programs that just about everybody saw it anyhow.

Goldwater retaliated with the "We will bury you" spot, which I don't think did much to refute the Johnson ad, and which nobody remembers. I can't even Google up the name of the ad agency:

Yes, but when Republicans do it, it's just a case of everyone doing it, and when Democrats do it they are being unpatriotic.

What is lost in the hoopla is that our real enemy is not even the Russians. We are entering into arms treaties with the wrong people. Talk about fighting the last war.

HAving lived in that psychotic state, and having seen in the past 25 years the people STILL coming
out of it, and getting elected (including the subject of this thread, Strom Thurmond, the idiot governor
with the S. American girlfriend... Mr. Religious Republican (another one) -- I'd like to see them actually
secede again, move the naval bases, and just basically nuke the entire state with neutron bombs that
especially target hypocritical and troublesome hillbillies that inhabit the dirty swamp.

Well gosh Jimmy thanks for wishing most of my extended family dead.

Please don't paint all of us with the same brush, Jimmy. The "idiot" governer is a fiscal conservative who happens to suffer a similar womanizing affliction as Bill Clinton. Many of those "hillbillies" are qualified with enough skills to make Beemers in Greenville that upscale yuppies like to buy, and the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner that will be manufactured in North Charleston. True, there are some here who don't seem to give careful thought before they vote, but that's true of all states I think; IIRC, Delaware (or Maryland?) had an interesting woman who won a primary, and Alaska has its interesting contest too. Not meaning to pick on those states, just examples I am aware of.
